hay bernd you don't happen to know anything about mobile routers, do you? i'm so out of the loop, i don't even know where to start find out about them.

>looking for some device to put in the car that gives me wifi on phone and laptop from a sim card that is currently in my phone.
>driving around rural places, the connection is often bad.
>a few years ago i was looking at these routers and i was hoping they get cheaper if i wait longer
>now it is later
>they got more expensive.
>used to be 100-300€
>now seems like 300-500€

any ideas on a nice device?

hmm they talk about a signal booster, like a miniature cell tower. having that with the switch of a button (not all the time, i don't want to increase cell radiation unless necessary) might be useful.
GermanyBernd2023-07-07 19:28:37 · 3yNo. 277750reply
booster is just some marketing lingo.
Antennas are passive by definition. You can't receive something that isn't there. You can only amplify what you have received more. But there is a limit to that as this introduces noise.
If you drive somewhere with no signal you can do nothing to receive it anyway.
GermanyBernd2023-07-07 20:28:26 · 3yNo. 277775reply

signal booster sounded active to me, maybe similar to a wifi repeater. just some powered device that amplifies all the signals so that my devices can pick it up better.

>If you drive somewhere with no signal you can do nothing to receive it anyway.

i have trouble imagining places with no signal. maybe some top secret bases or something like that but i would have thought there is at least a weak signal everywhere in this country.

Roughly twenty years ago while I was reading about this black physicist (not Neil deGrasse Tyson, different black guy) who claimed to be working on a way to travel back in time to be able to meet with his dead father when he was still alive I came up with this idea of a time machine being built within this huge underground facility like the one by CERN for the LHC, but this one would use a spiral of powerful lasers that could create a superheated fireball which might contain a micro-black hole (or microsingularity). Antimatter gathered from lightning sprites in Earth's upper atmosphere could be used to produce at least two microsingularities--the vortices produced by their spin rotations at polar opposites could in itself be/contain a wormhole and/or an Einstein-Rosen bridge which could then itself be trapped by employing the Casimir effect within a Faraday cage. The bridge could allow for data to be transmitted to the past, but only as far back as to when the machine was first switched on. Thus information such as stock market info could be transmitted to have a causal effect on the past. The bridge could perhaps be expanded sufficiently to transmit a self-replicating nanomachine to the past. This nanomachine could also perhaps expand the bridge from the other side to allow humans to travel to the past as well. Also, assuming that M theory is true, this might also end up creating an alternate universe or creating a bridge to an already-existing universe. This whole thing might cost anywhere from $10,000,000,000 to $60,000,000,000 or more. Such machinery could also perhaps be used to gather dark matter, and probably be used to access exotic matter--going so far as to produce zero-point energy.

Or something like that. Maybe. I dunno. I don’t remember the details anymore. Did any of that make any sense? I was probably experiencing some sort of a manic episode when I came up with all of that shit. Whatever.

Just finished "The Draughtsman's Contract" (1982) by Peter Greenaway. A great movie in all aspects: the music, the dialogue, the acting, the scenery etc. If you love the lavish and an intriguing story, this movie is for you. I can't find any weaknesses, so I rated it 10/10.

I have no doubts that it is possible to simulate a mind in a computer. Why shouldn't it be possible?
The question is what your mind does if you free it from any motivation. Usually life revolves around chasing endorphins. If your computer mind won't get any endorphin equivalent you will just be depressed eternally. If you give the endorphin button to yourself you will most likely just continuously press it like a heroin junkie. If someone else gets control over it he will be able to totally control your mind.
NetherlandsBernd2023-07-03 23:53:14 · 3yNo. 277269reply
> Why shouldn't it be possible?
I'm not sure if human mind can take it, with the way it works today. Imagine you found out that all your life, all the reality around you is a simulation and you can't escape it. You would probably go crazy at some moment.
Of course human mind can be lied to but that doesn't seem to be a reliable solution.
United StatesBernd2023-07-03 23:58:48 · 3yNo. 277271reply
We may possibly be in a computer simulation already.
TexasBernd2023-07-04 23:04:22 · 3yNo. 277380reply
That was actually one of the main underlying plot points of one of the later SAO arcs. The story conclusion was it's more or less "okay" if it goes into the "more real" direction, i.e. if you find yourself trapped in a simulation without escape, you go crazy because it's "not real", but if you suddenly one day find that your life this entire time was a simulation, that's the norm for you, and it would also be okay for you if you exit the simulation into the "real world".

If you free yourself from any and all external motivation, you will eventually find some new goal. You'll look at the garden one day and decide to start growing veggies or keeping it free from weeds, or you'll think to write a story or find a new book to read. You do it because you "want to", intrinsic motivation, as opposed to "have to", such as finding a job to pay rent or defend your country at war, external motivation. It happens much more often then you'd think; you get fired and you don't need a source of income for a few years so you reevaluate your life, or you get an inheritance and decide you don't want to continue old job.
Completely zero motivation is still not actually zero because you have basic physiological needs.

I want to learn an instrument. I want to learn music theory and read notes. I spend lots of time listening to music so I might as well try to somewhat get into it.

I tend to get some electronic device so I can practice with headphones whenever I want without neighbors getting on my nerves. Also having the possibility to chose from different sounds seem like a plus.

I tend to get something like pic-related instead of a keyboard because it does not take as much space if it turns out that I won't pull through with it and it just sits around in a corner somewhere.

Here is my advice regarding music theory:

Understand that music in the European tradition consists of 12 notes per octave. The thirteenth note's frequency is double the frequency of the 1st, that's why they are in perfect harmony and have the same name (e.g. a and a'). A major scale consists of the notes 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 1', 3', 5' etc. You can start on any note and follow this pattern to get a major scale. Other types of scales have other patterns.

Now, everything becomes super-complicated because over 9000 years ago some retard invented a notation system pretending that all the steps in a major scale starting with c are equally wide. Since then we are forced to use #s and bs to refer to the missing notes of the 12 steps when playing major scales that are not c major.

When music theory and notation seems complicated, always remember that the patterns are much simpler when thinking with 12 notes and be aware that the traditional notation system is very stupid. Thank me later!
