Do any of you use Discord or are involved in local hobby communities?

I'm depressed and lonely. For the longest time, I've only been involved in anonymous online forums. But recently I have decided to paint miniatures again and went to a local hobby store. They have a discord and I joined. People find other people to meet up for all kinds of games, rpgs and hobby stuff. I think this might be a good chance to find real life friends instead of reading the ramblings of deranged schizos online.

Yes, my WoW guild's.
I am great friends with all of them.
They are mostly quite normies, so i won't discuss with them about some race and IQ or the JOOS shit, but other than that they are quite chill out people and i can enjoy my gaming with them without feeling too awkward.
There is this kinda unspoken rule that no one brings up politics, and i am 100% fine with that, as otherwise i am sure i would absolutely hate some people i like as of now.
Not everything needs to be fucking twitter with 247 politics going on.

Cmon, just quit the assumption that Yamnaya were completely monolithic (protip: no material culture is) and everything makes much more sense.
Northern Caucasus is very linguistically diverse today & there is no reason to assume Yamnaya who came from that exact region (and who are demonstrably decent part CHG ancestry) would not include a CHG language speaking group too.

It really depends whether it's violence stemming from will to might (side note: "will to power" is a shitty translation) or aimless violence.
Only one of those creates a lasting legacy. Which itself makes it cool.

>How did you do it

I'm not sure, just sent a lot of messages first, and then skyped a lot. It was very natural. I supposing being "normal" and having decent profile pictures was important.

>Did you contact them or did they contact you

They both contacted me after I viewed their profile. For the first girl, the Malaysian, I was in Malaysia at the time and she asked what I thought of her city (KL). So we met up and we had a lot in common. I wasn't as nice to her as I should have been at the end of our relationship and I regret that a lot. The Singaporean girl I started talking to towards the end of my relationship of the Malaysian girl, and my attraction to the Singaporean girl caused me to break up with the Malaysian one. Once again, I wasn't as nice to the Singaporean girl at the end of our relationship as I should have been. The girl I cheated on her with and left her for eventually broke up with me and told me she was gay, which was the 2 out of 3 times that has happened.

>Was there an intention of getting a relationship

Not at first and it developed over time. I think you have to understand that people who are on that site are fairly lonely and are specifically looking for someone to talk to. Lots just want postcards and letters, but I feel an equal amount are searching for *something* which equates to a relationship.

I never really think long distance relationships work, and I think they partially start due to how each party feels isolated and alone, and feels as though they can only make a connection with a total stranger on the internet. But that's just my take.

I was friends with a German in Kansas City who moved to the US and married a girl he met on Interpals, and I found out because I met him on oldKC. I think they divorced though.

Yes. I lost my virginity to a beautiful virgin French girl on this website, but I was autistic and did not keep up with her after this, should have gf'd her. But I was 18-19 when I used it most, and this was years ago. Mostly just very horny and lonely girls looking for validation. Long distance stuff is not worth it though, although I do miss that girl. Many also have you and a bunch of other male orbiters (not that I did not talk to multiple girls also).

America.
I believe someone pointed out that during 19th century, some proddies had the idea that making their food taste good is wrong because enjoying anything worldly is sinful. So they made their food as bland as possible on purpose.

That said, Europe even has history of its own sharply spiced food. Mustard isn't native to Europe technically but has been grown and used here for a long time. And then there's horseradish…

Vikings put babies on spears.

In the Icelandic Landnamabók, which tells about the times and people during the settlement of Iceland by the Norse around 870-930, the nickname of a certain Viking is told:
>Ölvir barnakarl hét maðr ágætr í Nóregi. Hann var víkingr mikill. Hann lét eigi henda börn á spjótaoddum, sem þá var víkingum títt. Því var hann barnakarl kallaðr.
<Ölvir child-man was the name of an excellent man in Norway. He was a great Viking. He didn't impale children on the ends of spears, as Vikings used to do. That is why he was called child-man.

GermanyBernd2022-02-11 23:29:26 · 4yNo. 136064reply
That is a good question and one that scholars debate over for every single text.

As for the landnámabók (book about the settlement), it is relatively old. Written only about 100-200 years after the settlement and around the time when Iceland officially became Christian, that means in that time pagans were still around. There exist several copies of the landnámabók, showing different degrees of emphasis on Christianity. That doesn't guarantee pagan or christian sympathies of the author, but the probability of it being free of Christian bias is higher than in later medieval texts and the authors were certainly more familiar with the topic.

It is possible that the story of Ölvir barnakarl was exaggerated to make pagans look bad. It is also possible that it really was like that sometimes. We can't be 100% sure, but from what I've read in Old Norse sources, this level of violence was at least plausible. If you look at how viking raids were described by Britons, for example, you also have to take them with a grain of salt but they speak of insane amounts of violence. Let's not forget that we know for a fact pagan Scandinavians practiced killing of their own children in certain cases and Germanic tribes were known to sacrifice humans in desperate times.

But the truth is somewhere in the middle. Many viking trips didn't result in raids, they were just trading trips. Sometimes they practiced extortion, but sometimes they did raids. Surely some raping and killing and putting babies on spears did happen at least once or twice.

Good Christian Icelanders also literally bashed each others heads in with rocks during disputes about the power of local chieftains vs that of the church.

>The Battle of Víðines (Icelandic: Víðinesbardagi) of 1208 was a conflict that took place between secular and clerical forces in early 13th century Iceland.
>The Catholic bishop Guðmundur Arason had defended the exclusive judicial powers of the Roman Catholic Church over its clergy against the secular powers of the goði chieftains. In 1208, Kolbeinn Tumason and Arnór Tumason of the Ásbirningar clan and Sigurður Ormsson of the Svínfellingar clan advanced on the see of Guðmundur Arason. They wanted the bishop to give up several men in his assembly with whom they claimed they had rightful business. The bishop stood by his claim that the clergy should retain judicial power in its own affairs, and a conflict ensued at Víðines, near Hólar, the seat of the bishop. Kolbeinn Tumason died in the battle, his head bashed in with a large rock, and the clan troops dissipated. Before he died, he composed the poem "Heyr, himna smiður" (Hear, heavenly creator"), which is a classic Icelandic hymn to this very day.

What's your favourite dorf clan?

Me: Stiffbeards

Additional info:

Stiffbeards (Mebel-tarâg): Renowned Craftsman, they make their homes in ice caves on the vast frozen lands up north, starting around the ice bay of Forochel and all the way down in between the mountains of Angmar and the grey mountains (Ered Mithrim). Very secretive and peaceful, they avoid taking part in any troubles from the outside world at any costs. Despite their secretive ways, they are also accomplished merchants, and regularly travel vast spans of the frozen lands to trade with many diverse cultures. The items they create from exotic materials such as Ivory and bones from sea monsters are very sought after, in particular their fabled toys. Stiffbeards are ultimately free spirits, lovers of music, stories and the tribe above everything else.

Stonefoots ('Aban-basân): They are the somewhat less developed branch of Durin’s folk, widely regarded as great miners, gem cutters and delvers. They are otherwise considered by many to be quite simple-minded, stubborn and difficult to deal with, but despite that they are greatly favoured by the Longbeards, which hold them in high regard as dependable and trustworthy allies. They dwell on the southern part of the Orocani on the east side, near the pinewoods and shores of the sea of Rhûn.

Broadbeams (Fant-nuhûb): Great merchants from Zirakbhund (Mallost) and later Mount Dolmed in the Ered Luin, they were Founders of the great city of Belegost (Gabilgathol). The Broadbeams are well known for their wealth, their prosperity, and the formidable fortresses they have built. They are also widely respected for their military might, and in particular for their legendary Dragon-Warriors. They are also considered the greatest armourers the dwarves had ever produced and were the creators of the fearsome Dwarf-Masks. Most prominent among the Broadbeams was King Azaghâl who wounded Glaurung the Dragon, and whose Dragon-helm was later passed down to Turin Turambar as part of his family heirloom.

Longbeards (Sigin-tarâg): Noble and wise rulers, originally from the northern part of misty mountains on Mt. Gundabad (under which Durin himself is said to have awaken) and later on its southern ranges where they founded the great city of Khazad-dum, dug under the three peaks- Barazinbar, Zirakzigil and Bundushathûr. Regal, prosperous and traditionalist, they are the righteous heirs of Durin I The Deathless, and are therefore the supreme rulers of the dwarf kind. The Longbeards are held as a divine and sacred lineage by the other clans and command great power.

Firebeards (‘Urs-tarâg): Hot-headed, warlike and tough, Firebeards came from Nogrod (Tumunzahar) in the Blue Mountains. Supreme metalworkers, they are said to have invented maille. They are also hailed as the greatest Blade-smiths among Dwarves, and naturally many of the best came from their ranks, such as: Gamil Zirak (said to be the greatest of all times, maker of the knife Angrist, the sword Andúril and the Dragon-Helm of Dor-Lómin), as well as the legendary Dwarf-smiths Telchar and Garmur. They befriended the elves with whom they traded profusely, and were commissioned by King Thingol of Doriath to delve Menegroth as well as to create treasuries and weapons for him. The necklace Nauglamír was their greatest creation for the King, and the cause of equally great woe.

Ironfists (Zirin-mazân): Proud, strong and fierce, the Ironfists are renowned for their formidable warriors of noble descent and their military might. Hailing from far up north on the Orocani mountains and near the gulf left by the now extinct sea of Helcar, they are said to be the first to unveil the secrets of Iron and Steel, which they brought to Durin as their gift when they answered to his call. They are a very warlike and greedy people though, and are accounted to have been involved in many shameful minor wars against other clans, particularly with the Firebeards, to whom they bear a grudge and consider to be their rivals. It is also with great difficulty that they accept to be ruled over by the Longbeards, and despite recognising their authority as rightful rulers of the dwarfkind, they take every opportunity they can to act independently.

Blacklocks (Narag-zanât): Great architects and Jewell makers that made their homes in the Mountains of Shadow’s far eastern side (Ered Glamhoth), among the remnants of Hildórien in the arid lands scorched by the never-ending sun. They were the first to develop civilization and are prodigiously rich and unbelievably proud. The Blacklocks are very famous for their wealth and they guard it with extreme avarice. They are also accused of being the “black sheep” of Durin’s folk and of being greedy and selfish, as well as of worse things such as dealing with orcs and perhaps even Mordor. Unfortunately, many times those accusations bear more than a hint of truth.
