i have thick calves, i mostly did running and skating.
just walking to the bus or the car and study or work in some place and then drive home again uses very few leg muscles. skating uses tons of different leg muscles, those include muscles you don't use for walking but you have them for some reason.
i can grip a skate with my feet, i use the muscles in my feet to create an arch that pinches whatever i am standing on from my toes to my heel. this is some leftover monkey skill, i very much enjoy getting to reactivate footgrip myself. also i sometimes fan my toes out so they are very wide and that makes the surface area of my feet become bigger.
