So this is sending me into a frothing rage every time I hear this: Apparently the sentence "Viking is a verb" has become some kind of meme amongst people who pretend to know anything about Vikings. But it's just 100% wrong. It's like these people were saying the sky is green and grass is blue. Viking is a noun. It's a noun in English and it's a noun in Old Norse, the language the vikings spoke.

Example:

What these people are trying to say is that "viking" is not an ethnicity, but more like a job description. But it's still a noun.

If any Bernds care I'll elaborate and even provide sources from sagas saying "xy var víkingr mikill" (xy was a great viking) and stuff like that.

The video has 21 views, why care?
Nobody who is sane would dare to claim that viking is a verb.

Look, this woman isn't sane.
She has a video called "oldest viking song ever" with no PROOFS and sings english lyrics.

I just saw it on instagram from a much bigger account and I remember extra credit saying it on youtube, but couldn't find the video in question as quickly. I also heard it on a German podcast.

Generation Degeneration ;)

Actually, nordic autist Bernd, could you please tell me one or two cool viking songs that I could learn to play on my lute?
If you you have any suggestions, I've never listened to pagan music.

<Maðr hét Arngrímr; hann var víkingr ágætr.
<Man named Arngrim, he was a good viking.

Exactly like that.

I'm not an expert on music, but I don't think we have surviving "viking songs" because they didn't write down music. I know there are musical experts who try to recreate stuff, but I don't know how and I don't know how accurate it is and I have also forgotten the name of the group I remember listening to :DDDD*
However, I can post some examples of medieval scandinavian music that have some pagan themes in the lyrics, although they probably(and some for sure) come from already christian times.

*I remembered: Sequentia. YouTube: T0vrXzZzr38 Maybe this is what recital of myths with music sounded like in pagan norway during the viking age. Maybe not.

I guess it was just a joke that gone too far.
Old languages are crap though, a lot of terribly illogical and irregular stuff and some weird constructions impossible to pronounce.

hmm I expected something like the ThuleanPerspective background music xDD for some reason I highly doubt vikings had that kind of music

Classic sentence to spot someone with no idea what he is talking about.

Classic sentence to spot someone who thinks he knows what he's talking about when in fact he knows very little. I've studied linguistics, mostly on quite modern IE languages but had experience with older ones too (including the old Norse languages). So I do have a slight idea what I am talking about and therefore claim - old languages are crap, good thing we evolved.
GermanyBernd2022-04-19 11:58:00 · 4yNo. 146593reply
does this mean that our current languages are also shit because they are still evolving?

also, did you find a good job having studied linguistics? im interested in it too

Indeed it does. But they're much better already.

I shifted towards computer linguistics and NLP as I grew bored of all the science and wanted some coin instead, sorry
GermanyBernd2022-04-19 12:22:32 · 4yNo. 146596reply
won't computer linguistics be useless the day an AI is born that understands language a human like way?

I'm a codemonkey already and i have a fetish for languages so I'm thinking about computer linguistics but the thought that it might be considered a useless degree some day and maths scares me.

It probably will but it won't happen anytime soon, it's very far from there rn. Let your grandkids think about it.

I have a BA in this.
Calling languages crap is a subjective statement. You should know that.

Calling anything crap is a subjective statement. I just shared my personal opinion and elaborated why I think so, isn't that what boards exist for?
