I'm by no means a coffee connoisseur. My coffee consumption decreased a lot and I only drink 2 cups in the morning.
I've been using (exactly 2, first broke) French Presses only. It's doesn't cost much, I used to like the coffee taste it produced and is simple too clean. Grinding beans directly before brewing is something I've always done and is universally recommended, because best flavour etc. I stopped buying the 'big brands' coffees and currently pay about 15 Euros for 500g. Which for some, is still cheap crap I think.
I mostly switched to more expensive one because I tried narrowing down a problem I have developed over recent years in regards to coffee taste. Obviously Bupropion (which I am on for some time now) can somehow alter your taste buds, so things taste differently. Ever since I really dislike the taste of coffee, because it leaves a really foul taste in my mouth which is horrible. Therefore I actually loathe coffee today.
I tried everything: different coffee beans, different brewing temperatures, different kinds of milk (even soy and oat), but nothing helped. I can't bring myself to drink more than 2 cups in the morning. And even though I know I am gonna hate the taste, I still brew and drink coffee every morning because that's what I've done for years. Maybe it also has something to do with coffeine addiction. Probably it's not that bad, since I drank a lot (as in x litres/day) coffee before the destruction of my coffee taste buds.
