That's exactly why you should store your music locally.
SloveniaBernd2022-01-29 19:06:19 · 4yNo. 133860reply
I have probably ~500 gigs of music saved.
GermanyBernd2022-01-29 19:07:06 · 4yNo. 133861reply
If you have it stored in a lossy format, that's a lot, if they're hi-res flacs not so much
SloveniaBernd2022-01-29 19:09:05 · 4yNo. 133862reply
Mostly mp3 in 256-320kbps range.
There's also a bunch of classical recordings youtube rips, in 128-192kbps range.
I only keep flacs of music I really like.

Ok, this is hilarious. A statement by Neil Young. I can't even distinguish between lossless FLAC and 320k MP3, he makes it sound like as if there were worlds between lossless and lossy.

I want to listen to Neil Young though, can't do that anymore on Spotify

If someone is such a tight cunt, you are morally obligated to steal their music anyway.

It's quite easy to torrent or use applications that have fallen out of popularity. Before the new Android soulseek client came out, I was reliant on Freezer. Now that that is discontinued and that I own a laptop again, I'm using Soulseek and rutracker to rebuild my archive.
Storage is cheap too. 1tb micro SD cards are below $60 dollars, I can't imagine why anyone would go through the trouble of purchasing a yearly subscription of spotify that consumes both your data plan and wastes your battery at a faster rate than if you'd play it locally on any device. Then again convenience plays a factor and ignorance. Slurp up any objective in front of you and fall into peer pressure and you're a victim of corporate advertising.
I do dislike how spotify pays their subscribed artists, which could be a great move considering how little they get.

This is a great alternative: doublenegative.io/

What kind of quality do they offer?

Also where the fuck do you see such prices? Here you have to pay at least 150 Euro
CanadaBernd2022-01-29 20:28:27 · 4yNo. 133894reply
I saw them in NZ for under $80 quite often but that was on sale. I just checked here and they're all above 170. At least 512gb are below $100 in most cases.

>no 16bit/96kHz option
24bit is fucking useless (16bit already covers 96dB dynamic range, which is about the range between the volume of sound of your breathing and a chainsaw) but I'd like some extra clarity in high frequency range.

This site downloads from either Deezer, Qobuz or Tidal (you can choose), this is the quality those sites use, nothing to be done about it.

I know. Just my pet peeve when it comes to audiophile bullshit.

inb4 "hurr durr 44.1kHz is above range of human ear"
In case you don't know, that's the sampling frequency - and you need to sample at at least twice the highest frequency you want to preserve to avoid aliasing defects. E.g. sampled in 44.1kHz, 20.0kHz and 24.1kHz will sample over each other and can't be distinguished due to aliasing.
44.1kHz being just barely over twice the theoretical upper limit of human ear means that a lot of frequencies that are just over what you may be able to hear will instead fold over the higher range of what you will actually hear & this makes the upper side of the spectrum muddy. You want those foldover frequencies to be outside the range of what you might hear on the final product.

Serves my needs well then. I'm not so anal like other people are about their quality of music when I'm listening to it without headphones on my phone's stereo speakers.
