GermanyPlanning future threadBernd2021-10-26 22:41:00 · 5yNo. 125507reply
I was born with really shitty eyesight and nobody ever taught me how to deal with it, so the majority of my life I spent rather depressed and alone, bullied and without self confidence and love for myself.
That way I started to spend my time in front of the PC 24/7 and naturally I got into coding which is my job now.

However in the last few years I grew up, I learned more things about myself, I am not depressed anymore, I love myself and life in general, I became social, I can talk to people now and I'm pretty much a happy person if it wasn't for this job.

During the last months I realised that I actually hate spending 40 hours a week behind a monitor doing codemonkeying. Doing this all my life is not an option anymore.

I recently turned 23 and I haven't learned anything else yet.
Doing IT has been the plan for my life since I was ~11.
I need to find something new but I don't know what, not knowing what I will be doing in life anymore is kinda scary, yet exciting.

Share thoughts about this or talk about your current worryings in life.

Thanks

If I could I'd probably be doing some nice outdoor shit.

Spend some more time coding. A couple of years, at least; five is even better. Ten, if you can manage that. It's a lucrative job and it should help you to achieve financial security over the years. When you would get some wealth, than you could think about changing jobs, or investing your money or some such.

Meanwhile, while you're building your wealth, you should pick up some hobby that would relief your brain and bring you joy. Perhaps, considering what've you told about yourself, something that doesn't require a good eyesight, something that would give your body physical exercises it needs, something that would make you socialize with people, and most importantly, something that you would profoundly enjoy. I don't know, may be hiking, may be hitting gym, may be swimming.

Do you like to see people or you prefer being alone?

Maybe try different hobbies that you could turn into a job. I'm not sure how limiting your eyesight issue is, but I recently watched a documentary about a blind guy and he works at the radio. Maybe that could be something fun and exciting and I'm sure there are ways for you to try this out as a hobby, make an podcast, join some local radio project or whatever.

Also explore the idea that maybe your job is alright and you don't need to change careers, but maybe just get a more fun life around it. Here too my advice would be trying new hobbies. Especially sports can give you a new appreciation for your body and confidence. Maybe go to the gym, it's a good exercise for anxious Bernds because you can do it at your own pace without a team.

Also therapy.

I love people.
I still value time alone though.

If I do that I'll be in my 30s when changing jobs and then I'll likely have to feed a family. In general, when doing a change in life, the younger you are the better it is, no?

t. just bought dope

>sports
I'm fit since I daily cycle everywhere up to 1h away because 404 driving license. Already got myself almost killed a few times in traffic though lmfao.

>Also explore the idea that maybe your job is alright
Ach Bernd, being a digital construction worker is so tiresome. I'm nothing but a replacable pawn, nobody has ever thanked me for my work. This job might be nice for the $$$ but it has no deeper meaning for me and I consider it as life time wasted.

>therapy
I might legit try this

I didn't recommend sports just for being fit, there can also be a social aspect which is not there if you're just cycling. You can play team sports, join a club or just work out at the gym where you will eventually get to know the regulars and chat a bit. Just an idea to try...

If IT work doesn't seem meaningful to you, what does?

Sorry, I was a different man when I posted that. I'm a degenerate hypocritical junkie again but still advocate against using weed.

jobs that benefit people
cops, firefoghters, doctors, teachers... they all have a purpose. Meanwhile I work to make the rich even richer by optimising tasks robbing our planet.
Another great example would be my brother who does woodwork and creates expensive handmade furniture/items.

I'm thinking, perhaps I should chase my dream of becoming a professor in botany.

How'd you feel about optimizing some software that is used for doing good? Like software used in hospitals?

I have a friend who does mathematics and he works on some kind of medical research so hopefully they can heal broken bones more effectively in the future.
