Admin how did you learn to code and web design?
GermanyBernd2021-07-07 15:10:44 · 5yNo. 117130reply
KGB taught him.

He did a good job, I quite like it

Check out Odin Project (free, self-paced) and jetbrains academy (subscription, their Java program is good and I think they recently added web design)

There's also Yandex Praktikum if you like being forced to stick to deadlines but I think they've made their English versions quite expensive

>they've made their English versions quite expensive

it was roosia tire

the jetbrains academy is good, you get up to 2 months and a bit of access for free if you do a few tasks in a given time. I had a great introduction to python thanks to them.

I ask seriously I want to learn.
TurkeyBernd2021-07-08 12:03:32 · 5yNo. 117155reply
Can I learn web design even if I'm code illiterate, I'm really willing to learn.
RussiaBernd2021-07-08 13:00:33 · 5yNo. 117156reply
I'm into this shit for 15+ years now, self-taught i guess its persistence.
I also had first IT job pretty early so it kept me on track.

That's easier then learning to code i think. But it still gonna take decent amount of time.

Should I still learn to code if so which language?

3-4 years? maybe more or less?
GermanyBernd2021-07-08 16:01:58 · 5yNo. 117162reply
learn the basics of the C syntax for a month or so and get a feeling for how all this if, else, while, function etc.... stuff works before starting out with a language that literally puts a black box between the code and its outcome like python

its the only hint i can give, the language you learn in the end doesnt matter. you know one - you can learn all the others quickly
GermanyBernd2021-07-08 21:15:21 · 5yNo. 117174reply
I know. I just wanted give a bump for your thread.

thanks

I don't even know what C sntax is lmao.

I really really want to learn to code to program my own game, but I am shied away by the fact that this also needs some artistic talent like drawing, music or whatnot.
Thinking about trying to do a simple roguelike that doesn't need either of that kein stuff.
TurkeyBernd2021-07-08 22:59:15 · 5yNo. 117177reply
btw is it possible to learn in my mid 20's? It's a silly question but I think the age matters when it comes to learning.

>but I am shied away by the fact that this also needs some artistic talent like drawing, music or whatnot
find people who do that, lurk in nerdy places join their discord you will find fresh talents I suppose.

I once modeled my school in unity3D and with two friends I made a shooter game. We thought it will be fun to play counterstrike on a map that all our friends have known since 8 years now.

After two weeks of work screenshots went public on facebook and the next day 50% of the 5th and 6th graders didn't come to school because rumors between parents had spread that some people were planning a school shooting.

I remember being called out of maths class by the principal and having to talk to a psychiatrist who after some chatting with me ensured the sperging teachers that we all have healthy minds and really didn't think anything bad making this game.

I also made many many other games, game making has been a long trial and error journey for me since I got my GTR calculator in the 6th grade on which you could write simple programs. Tamagochis, shitty jump'n run games, story driven RPGs, a note location training minigame for guitar...

You should probably start by a simple textadventure in the console if you have never coded.
Remember that a game you plan to finish in 100 hours probably requires 1000 to be fully done :/

It is never too late to start learning, just give it a try.
Think of some coding projects and keep working hard until they work, that's what all the 14 year olds did :3
AustriaBernd2021-07-09 05:38:21 · 5yNo. 117184reply
Yeah, thought about using Unity myself already, a lot of simple looking, yet fun 2D games use it to great effect and from what I saw modding 7 Days Ti Die a little, the coding side should be very simple there.

A simple text adventure wouldn't be what I'd start with though, maybe one of those text only incremental games, like A Dark Room. Doing a tamagotchi myself does sound very fun tho :3
But also roguelikes because if coding/developing such a game is anything then the more advanced and finer arts of CAD drawing, I can imagine making it as modular for future expansion into more complexity, as I want.
Obviously writing simple LISPs for CAD would also be a benefit.

How is developing something as an phone app different?

Thought process for me is, that this is really one of the only sidegigs/hobbies that I could do to - in the long run - improve and synergize with my FIRE plans.
Even if it only creates just a little revenue, every bit helps and once FIREd, a little stream of income that only needs myself and a laptop would be very welcome.

Fucking laziness once you get a little older man...
RussiaBernd2021-07-09 14:34:23 · 5yNo. 117199reply
I would recommend strongly typed language to learn first.
I dunno try, typescript, because it is used for both frontend and backend.
How long? Well probably couple of years, maybe less depends on how hard you really want it. Learning basic coding is not that hard, learning all the libs around and apis takes time.

I wouldn't touch C or C++ in 2021 it's pretty pointless unless you want to do native coding, and even if so you have Rust for that now.

Of course, if you can dedicate time to it, and especially if you can dedicate all of your time to that then you have all the chances.
Ofc age matters because your brain is like a blank sheet when you are younger, but 20-30 is still sorta young age, and IMO age factor is overrated.

are there other coding languages I mean the prominent ones?

What is native coding?
RussiaBernd2021-07-10 13:21:44 · 5yNo. 117263reply
it means your code will run not in some sort of virtual machine like jvm.

there are a lot of them.
my favs are scala and typescript.
TurkeyBernd2021-07-10 13:28:40 · 5yNo. 117266reply
What about java? Does it fit for web designings?
RussiaBernd2021-07-10 13:34:38 · 5yNo. 117267reply
Well you can do a website on practiacally any langauge you want but generally i would say using java for it is rather uncommon.
I think java is good enough for basic learning but i would still pick some of the modern JVM languages like Kotlin or Scala.
