M35 or M16?
GermanyBernd2020-09-17 18:23:07 · 6yNo. 102397reply
For what purpose?

The M35 is probably the better helmet, since it is an improved version of the M16. I also think the shape is a bit nicer in terms of aesthetics.

The M16 has the benefit of being from a more underrated part of history, where Germany wasn't really the bad guy. From the two examples posted, the paint also looks nicer compared to the M35.
GermanyBernd2020-09-17 18:43:08 · 6yNo. 102400reply
I think the M16 is very uncomfortable when lying on the ground, the helmet will push into your back, i dont know if you even can look properly up if your lying flat on ground. The M35 has a bit smaller back portion but i bet its also still pretty uncomfortable.

The one which weight less.

The only time Germany was the bad guy indeed was the seven years war :DDDD

>M35 has a bit smaller back portion
Isn't that a bit of a disadvantage compared to the earlier helmet when it comes to particles such as shrapnel???
GermanyBernd2020-09-17 21:19:47 · 6yNo. 102412reply
There is always a trade-off. Optimal protection against shrapnel is not necessarily the optimal settis for the soldier.

Pre-revolutionary Russian helmet was pretty ebin as well, you can see where bolsheviks drew the idea of their hat from.

Makes sense. France supplied Russian Expeditionary Force with adrians painted in green, with a Romanov eagle on the front. Some helmets sent to Russia even had default French color and emblem. So, it makes sense that the Russian helmet looked a lot like French.

I believe that SSH 36 was one of the prettiest helmets in history since it combines the best from adrian and stahlhelm. I might even call it THE prettiest, which compensates the fact that Russian uniforms were always ugly as hell except for Afghan war.

>I believe that SSH 36 was one of the prettiest helmets in history
I personally disagree heavily. It looks bland as hell, like a firefighter helmet. Pic rel are probably my top 4, with a lot of other pretty helmets that come before your helmet.

The Greeks had some good helmets, but that was not one of them. And even in the case of the good ones - the romans made similar ones but better.

Here are a few other helmets I like but don't consider top tier. I'm interested in other Bernds' opinions. Maybe we should also include fictional helmets?

m56 of course
WWII era design that was breddy good enough that the East Germans took it as their own

The M56 looked like shit imo. Ridiculous proportions.

Given that I believe that stahlhelm was the prettiest helmet of WWII and Americans had the best-looking uniform during the same conflict (not counting the one they had prior to '43 of course, it was both ugly and impractical), I suspect I have a taste for bland things... Sallet is my favourite medieval helmet as well.

Talking of the American uniform, the m43 jacket and the service shirts they had are the only uniform pieces from back then which can be still worn today in everyday life without causing any cringe, and it was the first 'modern' military jacket I can think of.

Wessi buthurt

I suspect the main purpose of that design was separating the warriors of communism from their neighbours, much like why budenovka from earlier years of the Red army looked so ridiculous and was switched the moment they faced a serious enemy such as Finns.

I really like the M44 wehrmacht uniform, its very close to the modern bundeswehr uniform. Also you could wear the german camo jackets without looking to cringy :3

Agreed. Nazis were truly the most fashionable, even when it comes to camo. It should have always been an artistic movement, not a political one.
RussiaBernd2020-09-18 08:54:53 · 6yNo. 102450reply
Hmm, it's true that wehrmacht parkas and late war tunics are still perfectly wearable and even in Russia bydlos won't recognize them to beat you up without the feldgrau, but I'm not big into camo.
I don't know, quality of life under nazis looks very impressive, the only mistake he made was going east.

Quality of life in Germany under the Nazis was based on (1) recovery of German industry that started already during the last days of the Weimar Republic regardless of the Nazis and (2) an unsustainable economy that relied on seizing assets from Jews and plundering conquered countries.

Not entirely.
Which proofs that it's impossible to imagine something that doesn't exist already, like in that test where they asked children to draw a fantasy/alien animal but they all had features of Earth animals no matter how grotesque the positioning of those features was :DDD

>Quality of life in Germany under the Nazis was based on (1) recovery of German industry that started already during the last days of the Weimar Republic regardless of the Nazis

This is a total mirage. The economy of Weimar Germany was tightly coupled with that of USA and USA remained in depression until FDR lifted it out of it with state intervention using Hitler's very own blueprints for doing so.

>(2) an unsustainable economy that relied on seizing assets from Jews and plundering conquered countries.

War economies are by definition unsustainable. Furthermore, practically all that was taken from conquered countries went directly into the war effort. How can an import component that does not exist in peacetime that is used for consumption that does not exist in peacetime be structurally unsustainable?
GermanyBernd2020-09-18 10:44:44 · 6yNo. 102456reply
Well of course. It's hard to imagine a helmet that is completely unlike any helmet and still a helmet.
