United KingdomSouth China Sea and Taiwan Crisis, 2024Bernd2023-08-07 11:26:55 · 3yNo. 282074reply
January - March:

Taiwan's presidential campaign heats up, with a pro-independence candidate gaining significant traction. This candidate's platform includes a potential referendum on Taiwan's formal independence.
China responds with strong rhetoric, warning Taiwan against any moves towards independence and conducting naval exercises near the Taiwan Strait.

April - June:

The U.S. conducts a series of freedom of navigation operations in the South China Sea, challenging China's territorial claims. These operations are accompanied by joint naval exercises with allies such as Japan, Australia, and the Philippines.
A minor incident occurs in the South China Sea when a Philippine fishing boat collides with a Chinese Coast Guard vessel. Both sides blame each other, leading to a diplomatic standoff.

July - September:

The pro-independence candidate wins Taiwan's presidential election. Celebrations erupt in Taiwan, but China responds by cutting off diplomatic ties and increasing military patrols around the island.
In response to China's actions, the U.S. sends an aircraft carrier group to the region, signaling its commitment to Taiwan's defense.

October - December:

A U.S. reconnaissance plane and a Chinese fighter jet have a near-miss in the airspace near Taiwan. Both sides accuse each other of aggressive behavior.
ASEAN countries, concerned about the escalating tensions, call for an emergency summit to address the situation. The U.N. also gets involved, urging both sides to de-escalate.
Backchannel diplomatic efforts intensify. Russia offers to mediate between the U.S. and China, while European leaders urge restraint.
By the end of the year, a tentative agreement is reached. China agrees to reduce its military presence around Taiwan, and the U.S. agrees to limit its naval operations in the South China Sea. Taiwan, while not formally declaring independence, gains more international recognition and support.

You do know the reason the ROC is not recognised as a country today has nothing to do with PRC military presense in the region, right? And that pro-taiwanese parties do not seek formal independence (as according to their views it's already independent and always has been)?

Its a bot, don't reply to this post and do not support astroturfed discussion about internal affairs of China. Western people love discussing things as if its a game and taking sides in the discussion and then raising the stakes and investing in those positions - but its all harmfull, pointless and unnecessary, because none of us are Chinese and have no right to have a say in this. Imagine you have a internal quarrel with your kids and wife and then thousands of outsiders for some reason start digging into the details of your family quarrel - taking away your power as a head of family to solve this question and turning family quarrel into some circus and public battle, where not only your relations are at stakes, but some outsiders's capitals because they started making bets on you losing in that quarrel and they start investing into your loss. Its all very dirty, you wouldn't want that.

politics are of public interests so comparing it to peaking at a private quarrel is stupid

>have no right to have a say in this
We do as we live in a globalised society. Internal decisions of such countries (economical, political) affect other countries as well.
> Imagine ... your power as a head of family
Sorry, I just can't imagine me believing in some medieval bullshit like this. If your wife wants to complain to outsiders or to ask help from them - that's her basic human right, and that's normal for outsiders to intervene when asked for help. If you wouldn't want that you would need either to maintain normal relations with your wife (ones where she wouldn't be seeking help from outside) or get a divorce.

If there was a group of German separatists living on the island or in еру secluded valley in the mountains, then Russia has no right to support them, invite them to Kremlin or send politicians to their main city, we have no right to amplify their voice, train German separatist soldiers to oppose central German government. If its Germans against Germans who argue who is the top German, then others should keep their distance and let them decide it between yourself, through dialogue or struggle, its non of my business.

What if your wife wants to take over your shared house and wants get everything you both own to herself and she first tries to beat you, and when she fails with physical force to get what she wants, she retreats to a room and calls the police, poses as a victim and hopes that police and outsiders would kill you, so she could later get out of the room, kick your corpse and become the sole inheritor of your shared property?

You have no right to support Northern Hungarian separatists. Neither the EU or everyone else.

So. There is only on China. Either PRC or ROC. Both includes Taiwan.

In a few years from now, Chinese astronauts from PRC will be walking on the Moon, with red flag waving in vacuum, but meanwhile there will still be some cocksucker on Earth saying

>But acshually, the real China is this little island of Taiwan, and they have to rule over this bigger more succesfull nation next to them and only this politician elected in this tiny island of Taiwan have the right to speak for over 1.3 billion of Chinese who not voted for him. I am actually very smart, and this is fact, you know. When i expressed this on reddit, i got 1000 upvotes, so it must be true."

Imagine in case of Sino-American war - China would start to mass produce these kamikaze sea drones and just pumping them into ocean. Whole Pacific will be a battle zone, with ships just daily dying same as soldiers on Russo-Ukraine border.
the exchange of good via ocean will be risky. Ships will be just "disappearing" crying SOS and then going dark, captains will refuse to go, some island nations that rely on sea will be in crisis
