Modern WoW of the latest expansion is soulless and only fun for ultra neckbeards or such giga casuals that all they care about is collecting pets.

TBC Classic is better, but it has been out for a while, and at this point the community is in the "maintenance mode" where they just log in to raid and ignore the game otherwise. For a new player the world will seem dead.

 

With private servers you will have friends running around doing the noob quests.

I recommend Vanilla+ private server.

i think you can play for free on some classic emulator. if you never tried wow maybe its worth a try.
