In regards to the thread.

I use Startpage or DDG at the moment, but only as a means of avoiding more interaction with Google.

When I scrape up enough cash for a legit lappy, I'll be looking into more interesting stuff like searx and maybe TOR.

I used DDG until a few days ago, when I learned that they now censor their search results just like Google. Switched to Searx, will see how it goes.
