I think I try to open a sumo thread here.
I'm guessing the movie thread on /int/ got a bit too full. Should let it die. I'll open a new movie thread there for the monthly movies later.

So.
Nagoya Basho is still on, day 12 was today.
3 more days 3 more points.

Let's test if I can post videos.
Atamifuji vs Kotoeiho
Very good struggle, both rikishis doing well. The bout ends with mono-ii, the elders gather to judge who won. They decided rematch which was won by Atami
Tummyfuji has considerable teats, so this might not upload.

Who is considered the top cuck of the Sumo game these days?
United KingdomBernd2026-07-23 20:49:23 · 3mnNo. 363533reply
The top dogs of professional sumo wrestling right now are the sport's active Grand Champions (Yokozuna), led by Onosato and Hoshoryu. There is no single runaway legend dominating every tournament like in past eras, but these two young grand champions sit at the absolute summit of the banzuke (rankings). The Grand Champions (Yokozuna)Onosato (Daiki): A 25-year-old Japanese powerhouse who made a historic, record-setting sprint to reach the highest rank of Yokozuna, weighing in at over 420 pounds.Hoshoryu (Tomokatsu): The 74th Yokozuna and nephew of legendary former Yokozuna Asashoryu, known for his incredible throwing techniques and fierce competitive spirit.Top Contenders and OzekiKirishima: A seasoned veteran holding a firm grip at the ozeki (champion-tier) rank, consistently putting up double-digit wins.Aonishiki: The rising Ukrainian-born star who rocketed up the ranks and secured major tournament titles at the elite level.

Asanoyama vs Oshoma
Probably the best bout of the day. Asanoyama is a veteran, he held of the ozeki title some time ago. He had an injury, struggled his way back to makuuchi division, then got another injury so he had to start over again.
Oshoma, he is not too remarkable. He had a promising start, but he didn't become more than stable makuuchi fiter.
HungaryBernd2026-07-24 19:19:32 · 3mnNo. 363595reply
If yokozuna Onosato had a healthy left shoulder he would be the best. He can beat all the others reliably, only failing a couple times per basho. But he is injured so he sucks.
All the other top rikishis, inlcuding yokozuna Hoshoryu has the tendency to fail against opponents they should beat. Hosh is barely better then the rest.
Aonishiki, the young Ukrainian, is really promising, he is strong, quick in action and thinking, has good instincts, he really has a talent for this. However he relies a lot on bending forward from the hips, almost horizontal, and they started to counter that, plus when his back fails, he'll be buggered. But by then perhaps he'll be yokozuna for years. He is ozeki now, which is the topmost rank just below yokozuna. My problem is that I suspect they stack the deck in his favor. Just the other day they let him walk with an obvious hairpull, which is one of the rare forbidden moves.
Atamifuji is also a young talent. And he is big. He rises slower than Aonishiki, but he might become even better. Time will tell.
There are some more young talents, but they need to mature.

Daieisho vs Kotoshoho
I think Daieisho currently is the most true practitioner of oshizumo. Oshidashi is the style when the rikishi moves his opponent with constant pushing motions. The rikishi doesn't grab the pantsu and wrestles, but dishes out large amount of slaps, so called tsupparis, to the opponent. Some are more effective than others, and Daieisho's regular pushes are pretty forceful.
See replay in slower motion.

HungaryBernd2026-07-29 07:29:09 · 3mnNo. 363806reply
Yes. As far as I know first time ever. And they have two. Shishi started a while back around 2020 I think I can look it up. You can too, many rikishis have Wikipedia page, and there is at least one sumo database.

Number of foreign wrestlers get into sumo. It has a worldwide amateur championship and whatnot, many countries have their own athletes, Hungary too. However not many get into Japanese professional sumo. And probably even less gets into the top division.
Most of them are Mongols. Right now in makuuchi and juryo (top two divisions), has Mongols from Mongolia, China, and Tuva.
There is a Kazakh rikishi (looks Tatarish/Turkic) and two Ukrainian (they look average Slav).
Previously there were three notable fiters: a Bulgarian (Aoiyama), a Brazilian (Kaisei), and a Georgian (Tochinoshin whom you posted). They were veterans already when I started to watch sumo in 2020. Since all retired.
Even before there were others, Hawaiian beasts and whatnot.

The Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament is finished on Sunday.
Aonishiki has the yusho (tournament championship). He won in the playoffs (slapoff as we call it), beating two rivals: Atamifuji and Kirishima. He also secured his way back to the rank ozeki, and now he can set his eyes to the yokozuna title. It is likely he will be able to get it.

I'm planning to post some videos, I hope the engine will allow me.

Here's makuuchi banzuke.
Makuuchi is the top division. We watch this and the division one below. juryo.

Hoshoryu is probably out, due to injury, not entirely sure yet. But the other yokozuna, Onosato is back in full training.
On ozeki level both Kirishima and Aonishiki is eyeing the yokozuna title
Below there many young talents (such as Atamifuji) heading upwards while couple of veterans (eg Takayasu) fighting for staying close to the top.

The tournament starts today. Will stream at 12:30 US East Coast time on Endchan's cytube channel.

There is a young Balt/Belarusian/Ukrainian (not sure, judging by his name some of the latters, Ukrainian is especially a good bet, but Belarus is closer to his home country) in the one of the lower divisions. We'll see how he proceeds. I doubt we'll see any bouts of his however. Perhaps it's possible to check on NHK

Oh the first article is about Hoshoryu, one of the yokozunas. He won't participate this basho due to injury.
The article said his oyakata (coach) wanted him to sit this out until he is 100% so he can finally win a tournament as yokozuna. He has yushos, but he hasn't won one in that rank, which is kinda shameful. I understand their reasoning.
He also never sit out a full tournament I think, not entirely sure, not recently for sure.

Gud opening day. Gonna try uploading a bout.
HungaryBernd2026-09-13 17:56:00 · 1mnNo. 365474reply
I can't. Getting JSON error. Wanted to upload the: Ura vs Shishi bout
I think Shishi is about the topmost position he can achieve. He is a big lad and a solid rikishi, but not too talented, a least not as much as his compatriot. Ura is a quick rikishi, albeit getting old.
I have it in the highlights on endchan/sp there is a dedicated thread for sumo uploads there. Check it out.
HungaryBernd2026-09-16 19:19:44 · 1mnNo. 365543reply
The basho goes on with full force. Onosato - the participating yokozuna - seems strong, albeit today he lost from Takayasu in a hilarious manner. It did not depend on strength let me tell you.
Aonishiki and Kirishima are in good form as well, although both has one loss. Funnily enough Kirishima lost from Takayas' yesterday.
It's too early to draw conclusions yet, but surprisingly ozeki Kotozakura is the only unbeaten rikishi. He did quite weak on many previous bashos, and his position as ozeki was weak too, faced potential demotion. He has a good chance to end with a quite good result, like 10+ wins if he keeps this up.

The honbasho is over, yokozuna Onosato won the makuuchi yusho, defeating ozeki Aonishiki on the last day. They both had 11-3 at that point.
12 points for a yokozuna is not so great, but he was recovering from injury, and just returned to full training before the basho. Hopefully he's gonna get better.
I uploaded the Award Ceremony and Yusho Intervio to endchan, on the /sp/ board. It's the last post currently in thread #301876. It's worth a watch.
HungaryBernd2026-09-28 20:19:44 · 3wNo. 365871reply
What's in the video?
1. dudes act out the winning bout
2. award ceremony
3. interview
4. more awards
5. awards to other rikishis form makuuchi
6. dohyo deconstruction ceremony
7. rolling out in a car
Onosato's emotional state is very interesting. He is so distinct since his reactions are very rich in emotion. We have this perception that Jappos bottle their feelings up, and there are quite some rikishis with a great pokerface. But Onosato has hard time controlling himself.
At the start of the ceremony they listen and sing the national anthem, he struggles with tears. I think this "vulnerability" makes his character likeable.I use quotation marks because the viewers can catch other emotions during bashos. I can clearly recall a moment from a previous tournament when he had to suppress a grin when a rival lost his bout. It wasn't scornful, but he looked relieved.
He also very tense before each fite, and appears concentrating the task. And when he wins again he looks also very relieved he was done and done successfully. He enjoys the sumo itself.
In comparison the great yokozuna Hakuho had The Angry Dad Stare before each fite, trying to intimidate the opponent. And then he enjoyed defeating them, he was hyped after specific well performed kimarite's (finishing moves). He appeared very predatory in comparison. It isn't bad, just different.
