Russia only wants buffer zones just like in the cold war to prevent another invasion for the west yet the west keeps cornering them to get a reaction out of them like the war in Ukraine because they need to justify NATOs existance for US to keep their influence over Europe and justify their huge military budget. There is no reason for NATO to exist today since the USSR is gone
