MATE vs XFCE - which do you prefer?

gnome

KDE

I never really used MATE except when it was still called Gnome 2. I liked it back then. But today I'd prefer Xfce if there is an officially supported version of the distro I want to run. KDE is also very good, probably better depending on what you want to do. I never really got into Gnome 3.

Is MATE any good? Was looking at it as possible replacement for my vanilla Ubuntu gnome I have been using for ~7 years now

Is kde still resource heavy? I always stuck with gnome and xfce.

>>125470
KDE is more lightweight than gnome now, last time I checked.

>>125479
Good news. I know gnome has been adding unnecessary features in the last few years but I haven't had the chance to use any ganoo/linux flavour for some time now.
t.might install mint

KDE apps are good enough to be used on windows, not many such cases from open sores software.

LXQt

>>125479
Correct.

>>125431
Never used MATE. But if I would have, I preferred that.

CLI

MATE is basically what Gnome 2 was. Back in the day it is what I used on Ubuntu.

>2nd
Wew, that's a blast from the past.

>>130820
I remember it like yesterday. Fuck I'm old.

>>125431
xfce long time user, because MATE theme preferences are unnecessary complicated and I prefer Thunar as fie manager, but since xfce started to use hardcoded icons for their programs, that also look like drawn by a 12 years old I'm pissed off at xfce, too.
So I just stopped updating my system alltogether ad will probably switch to either KDE or Mac OSX in future.

i like Gnome3 yet it requires addons to be more comfy

Plasma 5

>Slackware 15.0 dropped this month
XFCE it is.

Gnome Classic

>>125431
XFCE, purely because it's lightweight and I use an ancient laptop.

MATE suffers from lack of developer attention
In my experience, minimal Gnome installation uses 500MiB RAM, KDE 500-600, if you have >4GiB of RAM neither will be worrisome
>>142004
not really, the difference between XFCE and KDE is like a 200MiB of RAM tax for a lot more functionality and customizability

>>142013
200MB RAM is a lot when your laptop has 1GB RAM.

>>142017
at that point even xfce is bloat, though. I'm guessing you're already running 32bit OS? openbox should use considerably less resources than xfce.

>>142027
Yeah, I'm running an old Linux Mint 32bit release because my laptop doesn't support 64bit. I used Crunchbang years ago, and that shipped with Openbox.

Isn't openbox abandoned?
Regarding OP question: I'd prefer XFCE over MATE. Haven't used both of them for a while, but I've used XFCE for some years before switching to tiling WMs. But since I'm using wayland nowaydays, XFCE is not even an option anymore.

>>142103
crunchbang was just debian with openbox, and the current debian release still offers 32 bit binaries!

>>125431
kms.
Both are fucking trash, gtk is garbage. Go LXQt or kill yourself. Qt is the way.

>>125431
XFCE. Mate is heavier and doesn't look too good with Graybird.
