Why is ancient art so terrible? Until Europeans decided to paint what they really saw with their eyeballs, art all over the world was stupid-looking as if a child drew it.
There are unemployed comic book artists that can make better drawings.
Why were the ancients to un-talented???

As for the Egyptian murals they wanted to represent each body part from the most characteristic angle. If you don't like these check their statues instead. But in any way their mind wasn't centered on the human body itself, but on human life and afterlife.
However copying reality (I assume this is what you consider talented) wasn't a concern, I don't think even in Grease. Even in case of fat roman emperors and such they might not reflect reality tho I can imagine from all the cultures of the antiquity they'd wanted lifelike representations.

The obsession with realiam came later, much of this very early was sort of expressionist, the tools avaliable also made a huge difference. if you try making art with chisels, powdered paints, inks and wood or very thick haired brushes, it is harder- not to mention the creation of the camera oscura

Perhaps Egyptian murals and their writing system originates from the same root. Hieroglyphs are depictions of things, from a characteristic side. Just like their wall paintings. And they were also often painted to walls.

Good point

And in OP example the hieroglyphs seem to complement the paintings giving context for what's there. And both tell a story like a comic as OP said.
Back in the day depictions delivered messages. Especially true for the Medieval when most of people were illiterate and during sermons the priest spoke in Latin or Greek which language most did not understand, so murals, statues, stained glasses all had "hidden" messages which the people could "read". Really like memes.
So I'd consider the Egyptian way of expression unified, containing both painted and written elements. The important was to convey a message, and not just representing the world around them in an artistic form.

Educational institutions were vastly improved in Renaissance Europe. At universities and art colleges, you basically entered into a room with nude people posing and sculpture references that you could try your hand at drawing. This form of artistic education had no parallel in history outside ancient Rome and Greece.
