Back in the past even as recent as the 1970 and 1980s,people with mental illnesses such as psychosis were treated horribly in mental hospitals/asylum. 50/50 chance that would be the last place you'd be before you died....and not from old age either if you know what I mean. Some of them places have graveyards behind them with 10s of thousands of tombstones from various years from the early days of the places to the final Years of the places before closing for good ,leaving behind relics of the past.

I figured out last Tuesday that I've been hand-delivering Top Secret military packages to a former U.S. official for six months without ever realizing it. Three a week. Sometimes four. To a farmhouse at the end of a gravel road two hours from the nearest highway. He used to be on every news channel in America before he vanished from public life last year. Last Tuesday one of his packages tore open in the back of my truck and he pulled me inside his front room, locked the door behind me, and explained in one sentence what's actually in those boxes — and what he says the rest of the country has about ninety days to figure out. That was four days ago. I haven't been able to tell my wife. But I've been ordering the same things he had stacked four feet high along his front wall, quietly, before the rest of the country figures out what he already has.
It started last November.
A new address showed up on my manifest. Last stop on the route. Long gravel road into a property I couldn't see from the road, surrounded by trees on three sides.
I pulled up with one small box. Almost set it down without checking the label.
Then I saw the sticker on the side.
Plain white. Black ink. Three letters and three numbers.

I froze with the box in my hand.
I'd heard those three letters and three numbers exactly once in my life. Eleven years ago, in a training session at the depot, from an older instructor who'd done government contract work before he came over.
He went through the federal security label series in twenty minutes. The lower-tier ones — SF-708, 709, 710. The kind that occasionally end up on a dock by accident if a defense contractor mis-routes something.
Then he got to SF-706.
He stopped. Said something I never forgot.
He said *if you ever see one of those on a package on your truck, you're already in a situation you don't want to be in. They don't move those through us. They don't move those through anyone. You're not supposed to ever lay eyes on one. If you do, something has gone very wrong upstream.*
He moved on.
Eleven years on the job. I'd never seen one. Not once.
I held the box up to the light. Squinted at the sticker again.
*SF-706.*
I set it on the porch. Got back in the truck. Sat there with the engine off and pulled out my phone.
The first result was the federal regulation page.
*SF-706 — TOP SECRET Label. Used to identify and protect electronic media containing Top Secret information. Once applied, the label cannot be removed.*
Top Secret. On a residential porch. In the middle of nowhere.
I drove the rest of my route that afternoon barely paying attention to the road.
The packages kept coming. Three a week. Sometimes four. Different label every time — SF-707, 708, 709, 712. Every one of them the kind a depot driver isn't supposed to see in his career. I started writing them down in the cab between stops just to convince myself I wasn't imagining it.
A month in I still hadn't laid eyes on the man they were going to.
That changed on a Tuesday.
I pulled up to the porch with a light box. Walked it up to the door.
There was a sign taped to the inside of the storm door at eye level. Hand-printed. Black marker.
*No soliciting. No drop-ins. Leave packages on the bench. Do not knock.*
Underneath that, smaller: *Cameras on the property.*
12 years on this route. I'd never seen a sign like that on a residential porch in my life.
I set the box on the bench. Stepped back. Took a second longer than I needed to before I turned around.
That's when I saw the back of the property.
Long rows of dirt tilled into the ground where lawn used to be. Stakes hammered in. A pile of cinderblocks. A roll of plastic sheeting next to a wheelbarrow. Past that, a shed I could just barely make out through the trees with what looked like solar panels propped against the side.
The land had been cleared recently. The dirt was still dark from being turned.
Not gardening. Building.
I got back in the truck and started rolling toward the gate.
That's when the front door opened.
I caught it in my side mirror. A man stepping out onto the porch. Reaching for the box on the bench. Looking up the road in both directions before he picked it up.
I tapped the brakes. Slowed down. Watched.
He was maybe sixty. Salt and pepper hair, neatly cut. Khakis. A polo shirt that didn't have a logo. The kind of man who doesn't dress for anyone.
He picked up the box. Looked straight at my truck for half a second.
That's when it hit me.
I knew that face.
I'd seen it on every news broadcast for the better part of a decade. Standing behind a podium. Sitting across from anchors I watch every night. Speaking on behalf of people whose names show up on the front page of the paper.
I'd seen that face a thousand times.
I'd just never seen it in a polo shirt picking up a federal classification label on a porch in the middle of nowhere.
He went back inside. The door shut. I heard the deadbolt from twenty feet away.
I almost called my wife. Didn't.
I told myself I had the wrong guy.
I knew I didn't.
Over the next four months I watched him build something back there.
Hoop houses by month two. A chicken coop. A goat pen. A small greenhouse with insulated walls by month three. Solar panels going up on the back of the barn. A second well cap that wasn't there in October. A satellite dish that didn't point at any TV signal I recognized.
Not a hobby. A working farm. The kind a family lives off of when nothing else is coming.
And every week, more of those classified-label boxes stacking up wherever he was putting them.
The guy was preparing for something.
Whatever was in those boxes was part of how.
Last Tuesday I found out what.
I was loading my truck at the depot. Stacking boxes for the day. One of his — SF-708, Confidential — caught on a strap as I lifted it off the cart.
Tore right open. Maybe four inches.
I didn't reach in. Didn't look. I knew that label by then. I knew not to touch it.
But the box had popped enough that I could see something blue sticking out of the tear.
A tube. Plastic. About the size of a thick marker. Dark blue, with white printing on the side I couldn't make out.
I'd never seen anything like it.
I taped the side closed and put the box on the floor of the cab so it wouldn't move around.
I made the decision driving over there.
I was going to skip my last two stops and bring his package directly. Tell him what happened. Show him I hadn't touched it.
I didn't want to be the guy who damaged a classified-label package and then dropped it on a porch like nothing had happened.
I pulled into his driveway around 2 PM.
Knocked on the door. Took a step back. Held the box out so he could see it the second he opened up.
He opened the door. Saw the tape. Saw the tear.
His face changed.
Not the worn-out look I was used to. Something else.
His eyes went straight to the label, then to the tear, then to me.
"Did you open this."
"No sir."
"Did you look inside."
"No sir. The strap caught it at the depot. I taped it shut and brought it straight here."
"Who else handled it."
"Just me. The guys at sort would've put it on the cart this morning before I got there. After that just me."
"Did anyone see it after the tear."
"No sir. I taped it up before I left the depot. It's been on the floor of my cab the whole way."
He was breathing through his nose now. Looking past me at the driveway. Looking at the road behind me.
"You skipped stops."
"I skipped my last two. I'll go back after this."
He looked at me for a long second.
"You don't understand what this is."
"I know it's confidential, sir. I read the label."
"No. You don't understand. Nobody outside of a very specific group is supposed to see inside one of these. Ever."
"I didn't see inside."
"You saw something."
"I saw something blue. Through the tear. I didn't pull it out. I didn't reach in. I didn't take a picture."
He was quiet.
"I just didn't want to leave it on your porch and pretend I didn't know."
He looked at the box again.
Took it from me. Slow.
"Thank you."
He started to close the door.
I should have walked back to the truck.
I didn't.
"Sir. If you don't mind me asking."
The door stopped. Open about six inches.
"What."
"I know who you are."
He didn't say anything.
"I've been delivering to this route for 12 years. I knew your face the first time I rang this bell. You used to be on the news every night."
He still didn't say anything.
"I won't say your name. I haven't said it to anyone. Not my wife. Not the guys at the depot. I'm not going to."
"Then why are you bringing it up."
"Because I have a family. And in 12 years on this route I've never seen someone put up hoop houses and a chicken coop and a second well in five months. I've never seen someone get classified-label boxes delivered to a house. I've never seen someone walk back inside as fast as you do every time you take a package off your porch."
He didn't move.
"And I've been watching the news. Same as everyone. The Strait. The fuel prices. California going dark for a week last month. Whatever's happening with Iran. I'm not stupid. I know something's coming. I just don't know what."
He was quiet for a long second.
Then he said something I wasn't expecting.
"You should turn around. Get back in your truck. Finish your route. Forget you came here today."
"Sir."
"I'm telling you this for your benefit. Not mine. You don't want to be involved in any of what I know. You walk away now and you go home to your wife and your kids and you keep doing your job. That's the version of this that ends well for you."
"I have three kids."
He looked at me.
"I'm not asking you for clearance. I'm not asking you to break a rule. I'm asking you, man to man, what's coming. I see what you're doing back there with the farm. I see the boxes. I'm not going to be the guy who delivered classified packages to the one man on my route who knew what was about to happen and didn't ask."
He didn't say anything.
I waited.
He looked past me again. Looked at the road. Looked at the trees.
Then he started to close the door.
"I'm sorry. Drive safe."
The door clicked shut.
I stood there for a second. Then turned and walked back toward my truck.
I'd made it about ten steps.
I heard the deadbolt slide.
Then a chain.
Then the door cracked open six inches with the chain still on.
"Come back."
I walked back up.
He was looking at me through the gap. Chain across his face.
"You're sure you didn't take a picture."
"I'm sure."
"You're sure nobody saw the tear before you taped it."
"I'm sure."
"Phone."
"What about it."
"Hand me your phone."
I gave him my phone.
He looked at it. Didn't unlock it. Just looked at it. Held it.
"Do you record any of your stops."
"No sir."
"Dashcam?"
"Forward facing only. It doesn't pick up the porch."
He held my phone for another second. Then handed it back.
The chain came off.
The door opened.
"Inside. Quick."
His house didn't look like a house anybody lived in.
The front room had two folding tables. A laptop on each one. Maps pinned to one wall. Charts on another. Stacks of paper I wasn't going to read.
And in the corner. Boxes.
A lot of boxes.
The same labels I'd been delivering for five months.
SF-706. SF-707. SF-708. SF-709. SF-710. SF-712.
Stacked four feet high. Not opened. Not yet.
He saw me looking.
"Yes. All of them."
He set the torn box on the table. Pulled out a box cutter. Slit the rest of the tape.
Pulled out one of the blue tubes.
It was exactly what I thought I'd seen through the tear. About the size of a thick marker. Plastic. Threaded on one end like it screwed onto something.
He set it on the table between us.
"This is what I'm going to tell you. I'm only going to say it once. Then you're going to leave. And we're never going to talk about this again. Are we clear."
"Yes sir."
He sat down.
He started talking.
"You said you've been watching the news. Good. Then you've seen the surface."
"The Strait. The fuel. The blackouts in California last month. The Philippines emergency. Italy's defense minister on the record saying he can't sleep. The shipping lane disruption. All of that is real. All of that is in the news."
"What's not in the news yet is what the people in the buildings I used to walk in and out of every day are getting ready to do about it."
"The first piece is fuel rationing. Cards. Limits per household per week. Military gets first pick. Hospitals second. Essential workers third. Everyone else lines up. Probably starts on the coasts. Probably starts inside ninety days. Could be sooner."
"The second piece is travel. Flights get quietly thinned out. Routes get cancelled. Prices for what's left go through the roof. They'll call it a market correction. It won't be. I didn't say anything.
"You can live a month without food. You can live a week without heat. You cannot live three days without clean water."
"If oil shoots up, fine. We park the trucks. We stay home. If groceries get too expensive, fine. We grow our own. If the power flickers, fine. We light a candle. Every other piece of this has a workaround. Every one."
"Water doesn't. Water runs on a 72-hour clock. Once it starts and there's nothing coming out of the tap, you have three days before your kids stop being kids."
"The bottled water aisle empties in 48 hours. Costco empties in 72. After that there's no water for sale anywhere in this country. Not at any price. You drink what you stored or you don't drink."
"And the part nobody outside the rooms I sat in is saying out loud — the tap goes with it."
"Texas. February 2021. Three-day grid failure. Fourteen million Americans lost safe drinking water inside 72 hours. People got sick from their kitchen taps. Boil advisories ran for weeks."
"That was an accident. That was weather. Three days."
"What's coming isn't three days. And it isn't weather."
He looked at me.
"Picture your own kitchen in three weeks. Power flickering on and off. Tap running brown. Shelves at the grocery store wiped clean. Whatever cases of bottled water you grabbed from Costco are in the garage. Your kid asks for a drink. You hand him a bottle. A week later there are no more bottles to hand him. That's the moment that breaks people. Not the gas prices. Not the cold. Not the news. That one moment in the kitchen."
My stomach turned over.
"When the water goes, every family in this country realizes the same thing at the same time. That's when it stops being a crisis and starts being something else. That's the part I think about at 3 AM."
He set the tube down.
"That's what's in those boxes."
"What is it."
He looked at me for a long second.
Then he picked up the filter again.
"You want to know if it's real. I'll show you."
He stood up. Walked across the room to a small folding table by the window. There was a glass mason jar on it, half-full of water that looked like weak coffee. Bits of leaf and grit floating in it.
"Drainage ditch behind the property. Yesterday's runoff after the storm came through. I pull a sample every couple of days and run it through one of these. You don't take a stranger's word for what works in this business. You verify. Every time."
He picked up an empty plastic bottle from the table. Threaded the filter onto the top. Lowered the bottle into the jar. Filled it.
The water inside the bottle was still brown. You could see it through the plastic.
He flipped the bottle upside down. Squeezed.
What came out of the filter was clear. Not Brita-pitcher clear. Mountain-stream clear. He filled a small drinking glass with it.
Took a long pull. Set it down. Filled it again.
