In the only free elections of the German democratic republic, this region around Berlin voted left, for the SPD.

You would think that coming out of decades of a socialist dictatorship would make people avoid left wing parties, but in this case it didn't.

How to explain that? Was this region inhabited by the elite of the German democratic republic and a class of artists and intellectuals that believed in democratic socialism?

Then why Leipzig, Dresden and Thuringia voted so strongly to the right?

Berlin has always been a stronghold of leftists, even in Weimar times

Right/left thinking is of little use here.
Traditionally SPD was always pretty strong in the eact. However, the wectern leader of the SPD was sceptic towards a fast unification while CDU was full on fast unification.
So at the end if you full on supported unification your voted for CDU. Presumably the wectern part of eact germany was naturallly more inclined to have unification that the eactern part.

I don't want to give exact explanation to that particular case but consider this:
The regime changes in the ex-commie countries did not bring instant paradise so many, especially the older generation, have this nostalgia.
Beyond this the youngest generation today never experienced anything from communism, and some/many of them has this sensitivity to social injustice, they see how the poor and the weak is exploited by the rich and strong, and - them being naive - they think communism would be awesome to solve the problems.

>social democracy which is not socialism but gabitalismus with welfare and public services
Lolno.
It goes like this:
from pink to red, from red to crimson, from crimson to red, from red to pink...
from social democrat to socialist, from socialist to communist, from communist to socialist, from socialist to social democrat...
This is the transformation of the communists, depending on how strong the counterbalance. They all sing proudly The Internationale. See recent French elections how the "centrists" has no problem to ally with commies against the "fascists".
