I need a new bed and mattress and I've been looking around a bit the last few days. My budget is 300€, do you think it's enough for a decent bed frame + mattress? The cheapest IKEA bed frame is like 100€ and I'm unsure, whether I need to spend much more on it. I mean, the frame's only purpose is to hold the mattress, so I don't see why I should spend more than 100€ on it. Or do I miss something and having a proper frame is super important?

Buy a spring mattress; everything else is a meme, a scam, and won't last as long as this one.

Beds have a slatted frame which can add a certain amount of springiness and can get extremely expensive.
Mine is extremely stiff and does not add any springiness at all and I don't have any problem with it so in my opinion you don't need super expensive beds or mattresses.

On the other hand a bed is something that you could keep for your whole life so getting some cheap shit that starts to creak and come apart after ans year is no fun either.

>decent bed frame
They won't give you a decent bedframe. It's all crap. Buy a bit of lumber and build your own bedframe.

If you get one from ikeer I would buy one out of real wood and not from chipboard/cardboard. Should be more durable, you can repair them, and is not as prone to water damage. I have no experience with these particular beds but I hate chipboard

What's with these unrealistic recommendations? If I could do that, I wouldn't have made this thread.
GermanyBernd2024-08-27 18:11:46 · 2yNo. 317647reply
You could totally make one with just a handsaw, a drill, and some sandpaper. Use pic related metal things to connect the corners. This way you can take it apart again for transportation. If you make it out of pine from the constructions store I doubt it would be very much cheaper than the pine bed from ikea.

I have never built anything, I’m no woodworker

then it's high time to start.

buying planks from the shoppe, cutting them to length and gluing and screwing them together is hardly woodworking. It's like Lego for grown ups.

This is a simple bed that only requires a drill and a handsaw as long as you buy properly dimensioned lumber from the store.

Do you think everyone has a woodworking shop? I don’t even have the tools you need to do stuff like that nor space for that
GermanyBernd2024-08-27 20:29:34 · 2yNo. 317672reply
Why make a thread about beds and mattresses then? First you should make a thread about shops and powertools.

Get pallets then. Some aren't treated with lethal poisons, and can be used to make furniture.

I slept in a hammock instead of a bed for a couple of years.
You get decent big hammocks for like 60€ and don't have to care about beds or mattresses. Just screw two big hooks to the walls and when you are done sleeping you can just hook both ends to one wall and gain extra space this way.
Main disadvantage of sleeping in a hammock in contrast to a bed is the lack of isolation of your back in winter. This can get very cold.
GermanyBernd2024-08-28 16:48:31 · 2yNo. 317721reply
Is this not painful for your back when doing it long term?
GermanyBernd2024-08-28 17:27:45 · 2yNo. 317730reply
Not at all. Some argue that it is actually better for you back.
You lay in a hammock diagonally which won't force your back into the curve of how the hammock hangs. When you lay down you will usually have a bend in your hip but your legs and back will be pretty horizontal. Sleeping on your belly is a little difficult though.

Dang. I used to sleep in a hammock as a child until my mum told me that it is bad for my posture.

Time to rethink!

combine 2 of the super cheap frames for 1 cheap strong frame

Im a belly and side sleeper, so I don’t think it’s for me really, but thanks for your suggestion.
GermanyBernd2024-08-29 15:55:25 · 2yNo. 317827reply
I'm a belly and side sleeper as well and this wasn't so bad. The only problem is really when you don't heat the room that you sleep in in cold winter nights. Then you need several blankets and a thick pyjama to not feel cold. On the other hand it is pretty comfy in hot summer nights. The biggest advantage is that when you move a lot it is really easy to transport from one flat to the next. Moving with a big bed and mattress is always a pain in the ass.

Not for everyone but a good solution.
>in winter. This can get very cold
You can get underquilts for hammocks. Problems weren't.
