A medieval monastery student leaves the monastery and discovers the world and himself. A main theme of the book is the duality of man and being between mind and senses, artist and thinker, the maternal and paternal.

The scene where those contradictions were reconciled moved me to tears.

Will I enjoy this book if I failed to understand Steppenwolf?

You could, I prefer it over Steppenwolf, but all of Hesse's novels are similar in a sense, so if you don't like style or his philosophical concepts, you won't like this one either.

Just cried again while I finished this early Hesse. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but still has its charme and quintessential Hessian quality.

a year ago i spent a month learning a poem by heart, it was Poe's the Raven, the moment i learnt the whole thing i cried, the last chapter of it is truly touching and bernd-related. i still mumble it and "city and the sea" from time to time

in school I used to have this literature teacher that made us learn poems by heart. Used to hate it but now I get it. There is a certain understanding that you have of the text once you know it by heart. like those priests that can quote the bible at a whim.

Sadly I forgot all poems I knew as a child
