Recently I've been thinking about getting a driver's license. Especially when I'm traveling in foreign countries, it could be handy. But whether it's really worth the hassle (doing a first aid course again, going to the eye doctor), driving in capital traffic, spending thousands of euros, mmh...
GermanyBernd2024-03-19 18:29:27 · 2yNo. 303279reply
It is probably not worth it if you don't have free access to a car every now and then.
GermanyBernd2024-03-19 18:44:58 · 2yNo. 303281reply
I live in a big city so I could always rent a car. Don't know how expensive it is though.
GermanyBernd2024-03-19 19:41:49 · 2yNo. 303282reply
Do it. Cars are great. You can drive everywhere you want to. You can transport stuff. No annoying waiting times on the bus or the train. All that hassle to find a seat at a train.
Also it is super fun once you are used to it.
I started doing car sharing about 8 years ago. 3 years ago I bought my own car and now I do everything with it. It is so much better than public transportation.

I'm in the same situation but I've already had 4 driving lessons. Berlin is kinda fucked in terms of traffic, but once you start to get used to it it gets way less overwhelming. My instructors says it's mostly because I'm busy thinking about switching gears and can't pay full attention to the surroundings.

Getting it done for travelling and professional reasons.

Your instructor is right. When the driving mechanics become as natural for you as breathing reading the traffic will become easier. You should drive as much as possible, depending where you live this could be difficult to implement. Perhaps you need someone with a drivers license to take you to an empty patch of road or parking lot or something, where you can drive around freely.

I heard that it's much easier to get a driver's license in the US than in Europe? Is that true?
GermanyBernd2024-03-21 14:31:48 · 2yNo. 303401reply
Driving in the city as not that much harder than driving in the countryside. It is slow and you stand like half of the time in front of red lights. It is very good to practice handling the clutch which is something that you want to practice. But thats nothing to be afraid of.
GermanyBernd2024-03-21 14:59:08 · 2yNo. 303404reply
Only you can decide about your need for driving a car.

I could not do without one. My route to work is 20 minutes by car and an hour by public transport. That is over 1 hour for both ways I save per day. Over 200 hours per year that I would spend in full public transport alone for work.

Doing 1 shopping trip per week with the car saves time too.

Plus every other ride and event I like to be part of. Friends and family are 10 to 30 minutes by car away for spontanous visits and events - not a day trip with combined 2 hours of public transport that makes me think twice.

I only 2 times used a car when traveling, that was on canary islands. You literally need a car there to drive up the mountains and see every hidden place that you would spend day trips by bus instead and then still "only" see the few tourist attractions and not able to hold and go anywhere.

So after all, I can only say that YOU must decide. Actually GETTING the license is just a matter of learning (theory) and practice (the basic needed hours are more than enough).

The eye test can be done in almost every glasses store for few money.

The first aid takes some more time but you cant possibly fail it, so its just sitting through. (and its skills worth having, you could possibly save a life, even when not car related shit happens).

The money is a thing, but noone but you can judge about your financial situation in relation to the profit of having a licence.

GermanyBernd2024-04-08 12:06:41 · 2yNo. 304868reply
Mostly getting a feel for car's dimensions, in the first three lessons I was driving too far on the left side of my lane and my instructor had to constantly remind me of that. But otherwise the most difficult thing to get down was driving stick and using both feet instead of one, transitioning between clutch and gas pedal smoothly etc. Automatic is waaay easier, feels like driving in a video game pretty much.
GermanyBernd2024-04-08 12:33:29 · 2yNo. 304869reply

Look less at the white line and pay more attention to the dark line made by car wheels on the road.
> driving stick
practice driving with parents in a cordoned-off area. It gets better with experience.

Yes. There are still many cars who only have stick. Some day you might not be able to choose what car to drive. It's better to be safe than sorry, I think.

You can access a larger used car market.
Fast cars are usually stick.
Idk, stick is kinda fun to drive and also I'd rather learn it just in case.

depends on the uni, really

some have sport sections and let you choose (e.g. various team sports, weightlifting, swimming, running etc., some places also have stuff like chess or bridge the card game, which I'm not sure count as a sport, at least in the physical sense)

at my uni PE was a mandatory mix of weightlifting, swimming and team sports

it sucked so much when I had swimming in the middle of the day and needed to dry myself and rush to the other side of campus in 20 minutes for a next lecture

also, to pass 100% attendance was required so if someone got ill they needed to come to a make-up class

>how does the German driving test look like?
You meet with your instructor and an examiner at a parking lot. At the beginning the examiner will ask you one or two questions. I think in my case he asked me to show him which were the fog lights at the front of the car.
Then you drive around for like 30-45 minutes with your instructor next to you and the examiner in the back. The examiner tells you where to drive. In my case once he told me really late to turn left at a crossroads and I had to switch lanes in dense traffic. I think this was on purpose to put me under pressure.
You have to do a full break from 30 kmh once and at the end you have to parallel park somewhere and you have at most 5 moves or so to do it. That's it.
At least it was like this 10 years ago.
GermanyBernd2024-04-09 20:10:20 · 2yNo. 305040reply
If you get lucky the examiner skips some of this shit. For example my brother didn't have to do the full break
GermanyBernd2024-04-09 20:37:09 · 2yNo. 305045reply
The test isn't really difficult as long as you keep calm.
I think most people that have trouble with it just can't handle the nervousness. As a student you are used to do tests on paper but doing something that requires all your senses under pressure is an uncommon experience.
