For days I've been having insomnia and I'm taken by an obsession with reading about the life of Muhammad, specially his military conquests.

Then I told her that I find synagogues kinda of ugly and low budget, in spite of the amount of people who frequent them daily, unlike mosques which are beautiful. She didn't say anything to this, and I decided to press her further: I told her I'm reading a lot about the life of Muhammad, specially his wife Safiyaah, the beautiful jewish 17 years old girl he had sex with, right after beheading her family in front of her. I asked her what she thought of that, that Muhammad conquered and subdued all these jewish tribes. She was very perplexed and without an answer, until someone else sat at her table, asked her something and she felt relieved.
Did I overstep boundaries by asking her such things? Was I autistic?

talking about muslims raping and enslaving beautiful jewish women at work is ten times worse than looking depressed or ill. the latter is easily explained and wont be held against you quite so harshly, the former is bizarre or outright fetishistic.

Good question. I know it's a cliche to say that Muhammad was ruthless and savage, every king, monarch, prophet was the same, but Muhammad seems really bizarre and hard to digest.

an historian, m8. muslims aren't all clued in on the life and deeds of muhammad, even if they're obliged to pretend they are.
i agree with you, incidentally. he is an odd figure for a prophet, but there are better people you could ask about these things. if it were me in your position i'd be asking her about her favourite foods, television shows or something asinine like that.
on a more assburger note, the life of muhammad is compiled from anecdotes related by his companions, each of varying reliability, all collected after he died.
iirc i've heard a muslim scholar giving a lecture on this issue, saying that he doubts the authenticity of that particular tale, the one about killing the jews (he was a a moderate and perhaps inclined to think so), but there really isn't much we know for sure about the life of muhammad or what he did.
