Hypothesis:
Most tableware is not necessary for a single Bernd household. All you need is big plates and big bowls.

Small plates, soup plates, small bowls, saucers are all a waste of space. Especially small plates are retarded because they can hold less food and take the same amount of space in the dishwasher. Just use the big plate retard. Soup plates usually don't hold enough food for a single meal for me so I have to load it up twice. Why not use a properly sized big bowl instead? If I want to hold a small amount of liquid like a sauce that would go into a small bowl I can just put it in a cup.

Also why would you want a round plate if you can get an square one instead? Holds more food and takes the same amount of space in the dishwasher

Discuss.

Have you never seen a microwave in action?
Also, square one is easier to break.
GermanyBernd2023-09-05 19:56:50 · 3yNo. 286562reply
when i had these thoughts a few years back i couldn't find square plates. i have bowls from stainless steel of different sizes, they all fit in each ither so they take up as much space as the biggest.

i most like to eat from the pot or pan i cooked in. sometimes when i cook something involving multiple devices, i still assemble everything in my big pan and eat from it.
GermanyBernd2023-09-05 20:10:26 · 3yNo. 286564reply
I have squarish ones. And they rotate fine in my microwave.

>stainless steel
I have some too. But they can't serve as my main bowls because I can't put them in my microwave.
I sometimes run out of clean big plates and then I have to use lesser tableware like the soup plates or even small plates. I hate doing that so I think it would be better to just have the one biggest size which can server every purpose.
GermanyBernd2023-09-05 20:22:42 · 3yNo. 286566reply
only good reason for small plates is that i have a tiny serving wagon next to the couch. since it is so small, when a big plate is on it, nothing else fits, so i use little plates to cope with the limited space, that way tea pot and cups can still fit on it.

From this and the reaction to my other thread I realize that disregarding emotions completely is something that might work for me but is something that can't be extrapolated to other human beans.

So I'm willing to compromise. You are allowed to own up to 4 lesser tableware items such as small plates, saucers, or soup plates. But you should limit carrying them around to 30 minutes at most per day.
Also if you have two demented parents you can chose your favorite one to be continuously funded by society. The other one however will get pumped full of steroids and painkillers, gets titanium replacement joints and has to work in the mines.

Would this be acceptable to you?

Why not just use a large plate?

That's the whole point of the thread. Instead of having only few large plates and all the other tableware using space and cluttering up your cupboard you get rid of the other stuff and just get one big stack of large plates. Then you will never run out of them.

Sorry you are way too smart for the mines. You might unite the other senior workers under you and rile them up against the mining corporation. A small army of roided up seniors that don't feel any pain might get very dangerous to the establishment.
I'd rather have you write some application that can be used to store and organize our new workforce in a SQL database. That sounds like something for you until you get demented. Then it is straight down into the mines.

OP, you are absolutely right. I realized this in 2019. If you live alone, you basically need only a bowl, a plate, 2 cups (or even one!), and maybe if you splurging out, a mug for coffee or tea. And that is it.
One big knife to cut meat or watermelons, one small knife, a fork, a spoon, maybe a spoon with holes to cook beans, and you are set.

>recently I found some nice bowls online, what do you think?
I like them very much. I wonder how it would look to me when there is food on it.
Generally I'm very supportive of replacing everyday items with nice, expensive things. Just handling nice things makes you feel a little bit better and even feeling the tiniest bit better everyday makes a worthy difference over the years.
But I don't know about plates. I don't really care alot if one of my current plates chips. But when I had to see a chip on a nice expensive plate everyday this would most likely annoy me.

>did you just guess the best way to torment me?
You didn't mention it. I guessed it to t ease you.
The mines are not supposed to be a punishment but a way to create value. Good codegarchs are rare. So programmers are too valuable to be wasted in the mines. It is as simple as that.

did you get anything nice recently? I've been looking for some silk sheets and pillowcases since they're supposedly better for the skin and hair

> Did you tell this to your boss? Couldn't he have given it to someone else?
I didn't because that would be whining and I don't do that (I mean in a professional setting, since I'm kind of whining now), I always do what needs to be done which is probably why I got this task in the first place (but I also feel like I can do it well since it requires a lot of attention to detail and I'm good at that)

he also said we could pay one of our subcontractors to do it, but I feel like that would be me admitting defeat and I won't let some stupid database get the better of me

> You maybe have two knives and bring them together imitating a tong to turn the meat to the other side.
can you do that with one hand? I think not

why bother, just eat raw fruits and vegetables
GermanyBernd2023-09-08 16:58:29 · 3yNo. 286987reply
>did you get anything nice recently?
Let me see.
I recently got this thing to cut plastic foil. You pull the foil out of it and when you press on the top it cuts it. Before I used that plastic cutter that is integrated into the packaging of these rolls and they always disintegrate before I have used up the roll. It might look like a cheap piece of plastic but it is really nice to use.
Also I replaced all my cheap scissors with nice looking all stainless steel ones from victorinox. A while ago I bought a set of two matching and more expensive nail clippers which I like.
Last year I bought a set of three kind of nice matching pans and thought I'd be done with it for a while. But the non-stick coating on the medium sized one already peels off. It was kind of my fault because I made pan bread in it and overheated the pan. But now whenever I replace one I just go for stainless steel with no coating. Can you recommend some nice things?

>silk sheets and pillowcases
Recently I bought new sheets at ikea and had to decide if I wanted to get the linen ones. But they were twice as expensive as the cotton ones so I got weak and got those instead. I once had ones out of satin but I hated how they felt on the skin.
Do you have much stuff out of silk? I only know of scarfs and neckties out of it. I guess a whole bedsheet must be really expensive.

>that would be whining
You could have just asked what other tasks he had and maybe chose a different one. There is nothing wrong in having preferences and wanting to have fun at work. But I'm kind of the same in the way that I'm too stubborn to give up on technical challenges and then I suffer for months to get through. I really don't know if this is a good trait or not.

plastic foil? how very un-eco-friendly of you, Bernd

would you recommend those scissors? I wanted to buy some decorative ones but unfortunately haven't found a pair that would look good and be durable at the same time

recently got myself a nicer kitchen scale, it's made of stainless steel and way sturdier (and bigger, surface-wise) than the previous one I had; and to go with it I bought a set of stainless steel measuring cups maybe I'll finally make that German rolled up thing with nuts since it's been haunting me for the better part of a year

I also have a magnetic whiteboard on my fridge which is super useful for writing down shopping lists or anything else that pops into my head during the day that I need to remember for later

another thing I would recommend - velvet hangers; they look nice and clothes don't slide off

earlier this year I got myself a digital radio and I'm really happy with it since it can be connected to spotify or play any internet radio station I want, and it's controlled directly from my phone; on a music-related note - not really a recent purchase but noise cancelling headphones are my favorite thing ever and I can't recommend them enough

as for silk stuff - I have some scrunchies and a nice scarf I got as a gift, but it really clashes with the rest of my wardrobe feels nice though; but I'm still on the fence about silk bedding since I haven't found anything with cool patterns the bedding I'm using right now has watercolor-style flowers and beetles on it and I'm convinced I will never find anything more pleasing to the eye

> There is nothing wrong in having preferences and wanting to have fun at work.
that's why I signed up for a post-grad program since I don't really see myself doing what I'm doing now long term and enjoying it; or maybe it's just me being exceptionally frustrated this week

There is literally nothing wrong with plastic wrap. It's not worse than any other trash I produce and I only use it to wrap around food in the kitchen. So I'm using it to not throw food away. I doubt that a fraction of a gram for one use of plastic wrap is that much worse than having to wash ans plastic container with dish soap.

>would you recommend those scissors?
no tbh. Mainly because of the size. The biggest scissors from the victorinox sweden series have a length of 18cm. In hindsight I wish I had 25cm scissors or longer. Much more practical to make long straight cuts with those. I don't think that there are much differences in the quality of steel for scissors.

Does you electric scale has a battery? I wish I had one with just a plug. I'm always paranoid to turn it off when finished and recently my battery was out and I hadn't one of those obscure sized ones at home. So I literally couldn't continue baking without going to the shope to buy a battery for half an hour. And it would be no effort at all to plug a scale in when I wanted to use one.

>post-grad program
What are you going to do there? Research, teach, or just work for free? I doubt that working at ans university is any more fullfilling than working in ans industry. Except maybe teaching. This might be something different.

What difference does it make if you have one or two masters? Especially as ans codegarch it is more important what you can do and not what degree you have. Just switch jobs every two-three years to something different with better pay until you've found yourself a place where you want to stay.
