I recently had experience with automated towel provider in public restroom. An endless towel loop rotates through the system, drying and disenfecting used parts without interruption of providing clean parts, very innovative.

You sure? Usually those things roll the used towel up on another roll and a cleaning company has to come repeatedly to pick up the used roll for cleaning and put in a fresh one.

If you properly wanted to clean a roll inside the apparatus it would need to be connected to a fresh water and waste water system.

I'm not 100% sure but it clearly did something else besides just rolling it up, and it was also quite big. There was no water connection though (at least I haven't noticed it) so I think maybe they do some UV + very hot drying with air blade, would that be enough?

Maybe if people only dried their clean hands with those things.

But you can be sure that sooner or later someone will test its cleaning capabilities by taking a dump on the towel. And then the machine will be ruined.

It was an office building, I don't think there's a lot of people willing to take a dump on the towel in there. Also it's located on the wall so it wouldn't be easy...

Wouldn‘t you find it interesting to see what happens if you took a dump on the towel? Would you shy away from a physical challenge?

Why not use a big roll?

I would, but I also wouldn't want to find it out in the moment when I need to dry my hands.

So I'd prefer setting up the experiment in an isolated location which is not used as a restroom, preferrably a laboratory with monitoring equipment and thick walls.

You can't refill a big roll. You have to wait until it's empty which means that there will be some time with no toilet paper on the toilet.
