Were ancient egyptian kings and nobles often literate enough to read and write hieroglyphs?
I think not, since some pharaohs were soldiers who climbed to power, like for example Shoshenq I, who was a berber lybian man of war. Other kings were literal sudanese and canaanites who probably knew much less the egyptian language than the average egyptian.
 
For a king, wouldn't this be a very strange situation, to have your exploits, battles and achievements written on temple walls, yet you can't understand it?
