hay bernd you don't happen to know anything about mobile routers, do you? i'm so out of the loop, i don't even know where to start find out about them.

>looking for some device to put in the car that gives me wifi on phone and laptop from a sim card that is currently in my phone.
>driving around rural places, the connection is often bad.
>a few years ago i was looking at these routers and i was hoping they get cheaper if i wait longer
>now it is later
>they got more expensive.
>used to be 100-300€
>now seems like 300-500€

any ideas on a nice device?

this was one i was looking at. that's almost as much as i pay for rent just to have a bed so i can sleep without getting wet, cold or bullied. i don't have that kind of money.

Why can't you simply use the phone as a hotspot?

that's what i am doing now but it sucks. in rural areas where the network is weak the regular phone is spotty. means for 5 minutes it works and then for 10 minutes it doesn't. it would be nice if i could have it more reliably.

the advantage of these routers is that for 10€ i can buy a little antenna and then i just put the antenna somewhere in the car and then maybe i don't have the spotty connection anymore.

i dont think its gonna be better with routers, phones usually have top notch connectivity.
you might try to find some benchmarks online to be sure.

based on what? i've seen videos where people say they bought a router and now their internet is better.

There is something called a cradle booster that can improve the antenna of your smartphone.

based on my experience using them.

i ued one back in the 3g days and i was hoping 4g ones might be better.

if you ask 300€, 500€ or even 900€ for one (i've seen some of the newest cost that much), i would hope they aren't shit because otherwise nobody would buy it and the company loses money and when they lose money they can't give their money to the share holders and then they get fired and their children have to work at mcdonalds even though they already started private school and expect to go to elite college and have already been acting like an asshole about it.

100€ per month is not cheap and also when people see the hardware on my roof it reduces my stealth significantly and also it becomes apparent that i can afford 100€ per month on internet. though pretty cool. if i get more into vanlife this might become an option.

i wish for not having a phone number and instead only have internet. i just hate the telephone technology.

hmm they talk about a signal booster, like a miniature cell tower. having that with the switch of a button (not all the time, i don't want to increase cell radiation unless necessary) might be useful.

booster is just some marketing lingo.
Antennas are passive by definition. You can't receive something that isn't there. You can only amplify what you have received more. But there is a limit to that as this introduces noise.
If you drive somewhere with no signal you can do nothing to receive it anyway.

signal booster sounded active to me, maybe similar to a wifi repeater. just some powered device that amplifies all the signals so that my devices can pick it up better.

>If you drive somewhere with no signal you can do nothing to receive it anyway.

i have trouble imagining places with no signal. maybe some top secret bases or something like that but i would have thought there is at least a weak signal everywhere in this country.
