I have lose plans to build another power rack. I would make a half-rack out of plywood so it does not take up so much space. But I haven't figured out to do certain exercises with it that I can to with my full rack dips, bench assisted row. So today is not that day.

smaller parts assembled. Still have to tighten every single screw but I will do this last.

I got the aluminum parts two weeks ago. But it takes really long to drill all the holes and cut all the threads. So not much to report about.
I am currently regretting hard doing this because it was so much work while still being more expensive than a regular bed. I'm looking forward to cleaning up all the mess and aluminum splinters everywhere in my flat.

I'm finished for today. I feel tired probably because of the blood loss. The last screws were very tricky. Would prefer it if I would added some aluminum strips in the middle to pull it together. Tomorrow I will disassemble my old bed and then try lying in the aluminum one to judge the stability.

>will you be jumping on it?
No. I will wiggle it and try to infer the weak points.
My original plan was to just let the slatted frame sit on the aluminum posts. I think one of the main problems could be that the middle of the long sides might bend outward and then the slatted frame would just fall down. Another problem is that the corners are not properly braced. I think I will fix all stability issues if I just connect the slatted frame to the aluminum with screws. This will remove every weakness and make it super strong.
Maybe when it is finished I will let myself fall into it.

fugg.
While disassembling my old bed I tried to fit the old slatted frame into my new aluminum bed and noticed that my bed was way to wide.
Turns out that for some reason my sketchup-design was 8cm too wide for the mattress. 128cm instead of 120cm. I checked the length multiple times but apparently never checked the width.
I have to take down the frame again, cut down 14 aluminum bars, cut new threads and try against. It's over.

how did that even happen?
GermanyBernd2023-05-21 13:33:58 · 3yNo. 271683reply
While tinkering with the design and changing it so often it eventually lost the original width.
I could have easily prevented it if I would just made one block with the measurements of the mattress in sketchup and try it at the end.
Just this morning I wondered how everything went so well so far. There is never a project without errors. The only hope it that they are small enough that it does not take so long to fix. This is a big one.

8cm is pretty much and I want this to last for decades. So I'm not willing to have these enormous gaps beween the frame and the mattress. But yes. Too narrow would mean that I would have to order lots of parts so this is better.

I will disassemble it against today and the rest will probably another full day of work. Don't know when I will continue though. Maybe it would be good to take a little pause.

I'm thinking of building a mirror cabinet for my bathroom next. My current one is too small and I could plan this precise enough that I could order just enough so that I could use up most of the material that I have still left. Then I think I would have enough aluminium furniture for a while.
Only difficulty is the mirror. Those are always very heavy.

can't wait for another project report; how big would you like it?
GermanyBernd2023-06-05 18:28:17 · 3yNo. 273612reply
I can't imagine why you would go so close with your toes to the edge of the bed that you might stub the toes on it. Maybe because I'm way taller than you.

The max size I can fit to my bathroom currently is 80*70cm. I want it to be big and really shallow. So I can not put two items behind each other. Either 4 or 6cm deep. I probably only make the mirror 80*60cm and use the bottom 10cm for a little shelf so I can put wider things > 4cm on there. Also I probably want the front to be two sliding mirrors. Then I can use the mirrors as doors as they are and don't have to deal with hinges and how I would attach them to the mirror.
That's the current state of my thoughts. What do you think?
SloveniaBernd2023-06-05 18:48:00 · 3yNo. 273618reply

sounds plausible
PolandBernd2023-06-06 14:07:04 · 3yNo. 273684reply
maybe it's because you actually watch where you're going, unlike me

I actually pulled out a tape measure and checked the mirror that hangs in my bedroom - it's almost the same size as you're planning (80x80cm), and I'd say it's a decent size for a bathroom mirror - but the 4cm depth is probably cutting it too close (I mean, it all depends on what you're going to store there, but judging by the stuff I use on a daily basis even a small face cream is almost 6cm in diameter); I also like the idea of putting things in a single "layer" since they're going to be convenient to access this way

sliding doors will look way better than normal ones (are you going to put handles on it so it's easier to slide them open?), but it all sounds very complicated to make since I'm not at all knowledgeable about making furniture. although I have no doubt you can do anything
GermanyBernd2023-06-06 16:32:09 · 3yNo. 273710reply
>but the 4cm depth is probably cutting it too close
very good. I came to the same conclusion. I thought maybe I could just use a single 20x40 or 20x60 profile for the shelves put this would make it impossible to store a lot of things in there.
Currently I'm thinking of just making the frame out of profiles and then screw some aluminum sheets on there. Then I can make them wider without impacting the cost so much and also eliminate the problem that dirt would accumulate in the slots of the profile.

>are you going to put handles on it so it's easier to slide them open?
I won't try to drill into the glass. I have some experience trying to make holes in glass and it usually ended up in shattering it. But I will probably try to glue something on there. I assume having no handles at all and tons of fingerprints all over the mirror from opening and closing it would be frustrating in the long run.

>but it all sounds very complicated
I think all I have to do is attach some U-Profile on there to form a slot and then put some low friction tape on both surfaces so they slide easily. But I have never done something like that.

as if that could ever stop you

so when will you start working on it?
GermanyBernd2023-06-08 19:17:59 · 3yNo. 273940reply
Usually I try not to build anything during summer so that I spend more time outside but I doubt the building of this would take more than 2 days so I will probably sneak this in.
I still have to figure out the best way to attach the guide-rails to the aluminum profile. Then I can start.
GermanyBernd2023-06-09 15:07:38 · 3yNo. 274026reply
Just went to two different construction stores to buy some 0.8 and 1mm thick aluminum sheet metal. Also looked for mirrors.
I want two ~ 80x40cm mirrors. Mirrors that narrow are usually longer to be attached to the door. With longer mirrors I would have to additionally buy a glas cutter to cut down the length. Which would give me one bad edge that would be a pain to soften and might slide bad in the aluminum rails or possibly destroy the mirror when I try to cut it.
One had a 39x110cm mirror for a decent price but only a single one left. The other one had several 40x100cm mirrors but for a price where I could order one that fits properly from the internet. I'm very tempted to try out acrylic mirrors. But the amerzon customer reviews state that the scratch easily. What shall I do?
PolandBernd2023-06-09 15:18:20 · 3yNo. 274030reply
could you order a small sample to check how scratch susceptible it really is? I mean, even if it does scratch easily - it's a mirror and not something you touch and handle every day, so you're not going to have a lot of opportunities to scratch it anyway
GermanyBernd2023-06-09 15:39:29 · 3yNo. 274034reply
Probably not. But it does not matter anyway because when I look for acrylic mirrors I can't find any with the dimensions that I need.
I could get mirror tiles. But I think this would look cheap.
PolandBernd2023-06-10 13:51:37 · 3yNo. 274216reply

PolandBernd2023-06-10 15:11:53 · 3yNo. 274233reply

GermanyBernd2023-06-10 15:35:36 · 3yNo. 274247reply
I think mirrors are created by vaporizing silver to coat the glass. The boiling point of silver is 2000°C. This would be hard to do at home.
But I can order two 80x40cm mirrors from amerzon. I just hope they don't shatter when they gets delivered.

I'm not aware of mirror paint. I wanted to buy some mirror foil once which they advertised to be just exactly like a mirror. But when you see these things in reality they are extremely dull and distort the image to be pretty much unusable.
If a mirror is not super flat and free of imperfections it will be really easy to notice. It's kinda astonishing that building mirrors is a technology that didn't advance in the last like 50 years.

>write a complaint to the store and they'd send you a new one

Nothing that will really help unfortunately. Be aware that your mind likes to catastropize things which usually has little to do with reality. The worst outcomes usually just end up in costing you some money and you have enough of that. So who cares.

GermanyBernd2023-06-21 18:41:57 · 3yNo. 275769reply
Any suggestions on how to solve it?
PolandBernd2023-06-21 20:15:04 · 3yNo. 275776reply
make multiple tiny workbenches, each smaller than the last one and store them inside each other, matryoshka-style
GermanyBernd2023-06-21 20:27:58 · 3yNo. 275777reply
This might lessen the problem but does not solve it. The tiniest of these workbenches will still have unused storage space.
PolandBernd2023-06-21 20:49:46 · 3yNo. 275781reply
not if you make an infinite number of workbenches; better get to work!
GermanyBernd2023-06-22 07:40:46 · 3yNo. 275809reply
But this will take an infinite amount of time. Thus stretching the duration of the inverse storage problem to infinity. You want me to suffer for eternity!
PolandBernd2023-06-22 07:41:56 · 3yNo. 275810reply
suffer? I thought you liked woodworking!
GermanyBernd2023-06-22 08:23:18 · 3yNo. 275812reply
It's not about the woodworking. It's about the storage problem!
PolandBernd2023-06-22 10:17:54 · 3yNo. 275819reply
oh fine, I'll grant you one grain of sand to store in the smallest workbench, happy now?
GermanyBernd2023-06-22 10:29:11 · 3yNo. 275821reply
>grain of sand
So what your are really suggesting is to store stones in order to solve my storage problem. That's ridiculous!
PolandBernd2023-06-22 13:58:49 · 3yNo. 275842reply
you're not a fan of rocks, I take it? how do you feel about minerals?
GermanyBernd2023-06-22 15:08:38 · 3yNo. 275854reply
I supplement zinc and magnesium. Besides that I feel no more or less of them than of rocks.

Looks interesting. But what am I supposed to do with it?
PolandBernd2023-06-22 21:21:32 · 3yNo. 275886reply
same thing you'd do with a painting, feast your eyes
ScotlandBernd2023-06-22 21:40:18 · 3yNo. 275890reply
Took this advice, and now i live in harmony...
GermanyBernd2023-06-23 11:21:04 · 3yNo. 275959reply
What minerals do you own?
PolandBernd2023-06-23 14:16:25 · 3yNo. 275966reply
unfortunately none, but I'm not the one with the infinite storage space conundrum
