ESL Bernds, What made you able to speak/write okayish tier english?
Even slav Bernds recently don't use runglish.

I've been using English for a long time for several purpose and lurking KC for several years, yet my post still contains simple grammatical mistakes (mostly in the tense part) if I don't check before posting.
Also my vocabulary is not much, I often use dictionaries to pick a word.

I had English classes in school for 10 years and some uni courses in English. I had to make an effort to write well there. Other internet forums like reddit might also be a good place to practice writing, basically any place that isn't full of runglish and memes based on wrong grammar.

Does writing well really matter to you, though?

In any case I recommend reading books in English. It's lower effort, can be fun because you can read about something that interests you and reading literature is best for developing a good vocabulary.

I learned how to speak fluently during my years of video game addiction. I hung out with brits and also a finnish guy who spoke better english than the brits themselves.

My vocab sucks and so does my grammar, but my fluency amd pronunciation is top notch.

most of my daily media consumption (books, tv series, movies, online stuff) is in English

I find that especially tv series with English audio and subtitles are an excellent way to improve both your grammar and the ability to understand spoken language

downside: you occasionally forget words in your own language

Video games. Learning English by accident was both one of the best and worse things that ever happened to me. I wish I had never been influenced by those disgusting burgers when I was younger. Now its too late for me.

I learnt English by myself when I was a kid thanks to books, music, videogames and tv shows/movies. I also studied in the British-Peruvian Cultural Association during 8 months and finished the advanced level. Regarding the speaking part, what improved my level was travelling to the USA several times and also speaking with foreigners (not necessarily native English speakers) in Peru. Finally, I guess that using the Grammarly add-on and writing long texts in English is what finally polished the written part.

My mum taught me a little when I was a wee lad, plus I grew up in the late 80s-early 90s watching a lot of untranslated pirated US movies, then I had an Oxford-educated teacher in high school; as a result, I wroite loik a Brit and speak like a Murrkan, lol.

Eh, it's an East Slavic and Polish thing mostly. The rest of us tend to speak proper (if somewhat poor) English on average.
