What's with the sudden revival of Mirissey/The Smiths? Yesterday spotted an edgy teenage girl with a Smiths patch on the jacket

If you want to have answers, you will have to do proper field research and surround yourself with the environment that might be behind those trends.
Also while already being at Google, click the News tab. It will show you recent articles regarding Smiths

Maybe rock music is also making a comeback. Maybe even metal? I've heard something about an expected 'nu metal' comeback due to 2yk revival (though it might be over now? idk), low waist pants, baggy pants, etc. Like the 2014 tumblr girl being back and cool. While thinking about it maybe you should also check Tumblr. I've heard it is supposedly making (might be over again or never really happened) a comeback, too

>Maybe even metal?
Yeah, old school heavy & doom are having ans revival's.
>nu metal
Not metal.
Good nu "metal" is actually heavy funk, and bad nu "metal" is hip hop.

Someone please sell me on The Smiths. Every time I listen to them it just sounds entirely empty to me, as if it's relying simply on Morrisey's character to prop it up.

I feel like I should love them given how much I love similar bands of the time but the smiths do nothing for me.

Here's some bands i prefer:

Try their live albums, "Rank" for example.

It has the same issue I mentioned, vocally and lyrically i can see it being intriguing but musically it just sounds ok at best.

>lyrically i can see it being intriguing
A few days ago I was thinking about something related.
When I listened to some Black Metal recently I was thinking how little I care about the lyrics. It's just another instrument to me. I do listen to NSBM bands too, and I do also not care about the lyrics and don't even know what the lyrics are about. It doesn't matter to me at all. But not only for BM, but all music actually. I'll have to remind myself that often (BM) LPs I really like were made decades ago by (not always, but often) teenagers. I like the sound, but I couldn't care less about the lyrics nowadays. It's often edgy, cringe-inducing, teenage angsty, whatever, I don't care. (Although I am not denying it can't be interesting reading the lyrics, when the person responsible, somehow became famous for other crimes or whatnot)

And then it striked me: This was totally different when I was a teenager and listened to punk, crust, grindcore or anything really. Lyrics mattered a lot to me. I identified with it and such things.
