Which of these pieces of wood do you find most visually appealing and why?
NetherlandsBernd2023-01-20 13:39:56 · 3yNo. 250118reply
First one I'd say. It's less contrast so not that tiresome to look at.
BavariaBernd2023-01-20 13:44:57 · 3yNo. 250119reply
Beware of zebrano. It might be nice to look at but its quite porous and soft. I would prefer ans proper hardwood.
First one might be birch with a fungus. Thats a good wood and most interesting to look at.
DenmarkBernd2023-01-20 14:21:30 · 3yNo. 250120reply
Second.
It's organized but not too organized, it has soul.
Third one is too perfect, no soul, but I would prefer the third one over the first one.
I think the second one represents exactly how I would imagine the inside of wood to look like.
PolandBernd2023-01-20 15:30:16 · 3yNo. 250125reply
first because is the most chaotic and not just boring lines; but I guess it depends on what you're planning to use it for

guitar fretboard
its pale moon ebony, really expensive wood

one of these costs 150€

you should photoshop frets onto these pictures and then decide
GermanyBernd2023-01-20 16:39:13 · 3yNo. 250131reply
actually a great idea

i am going for the "spaghetti frets" by the way... made by sweden
for better intonation, they sound oddly good

i'm having a hard time deciding between first and second
PolandBernd2023-01-20 17:01:35 · 3yNo. 250134reply
wouldn't spaghetti frets cause a guitar to sound a little out of tune?
SloveniaBernd2023-01-20 17:56:31 · 3yNo. 250140reply
The contrary. They are curved specifically so that the tones are closer to natural harmonics (which are integer ratios) instead of the equal tone temperament which creates irrational ratios (based on 12th root of 2 semitone).
SloveniaBernd2023-01-20 17:58:24 · 3yNo. 250141reply
depending on the vibe you're going for.
1st one has the most individualism.
2nd for old time comfy feels.
3rd one for neat tech licks.

thanks for answering for me, i was too lazy to explain again

I liked the first most on first sight but after I slept over it one night I kinda had the association that it looks like someone with diarrhea pooping over it and now i'm having difficulties unseeing it lol
PolandBernd2023-01-20 18:33:51 · 3yNo. 250149reply
that's interesting, I thought spaghetti frets were just randomly bent
SloveniaBernd2023-01-20 19:08:03 · 3yNo. 250164reply
There's of course the downside to it, that is, the entire instrument now has a home key it is built around and the further you modulate from that, the more off that scale will sound.
On an equal temperament instrument, all scales sound equally (just barely) off.
Since most songs for guitar will be written around the chords that come naturally (are the easiest to finger) this is not really your priority, but if you want to play in a group setting with instruments which might have different home keys... equal temperament is a better idea.
GermanyBernd2023-01-20 19:15:37 · 3yNo. 250169reply
wrong!

true temperament frets are just closer to equal temperament than standard guitar frets
they are still imperfect, just noticeably closer

they are by no means made to sound better around certain keys
SloveniaBernd2023-01-20 19:55:15 · 3yNo. 250178reply
>true temperament frets are just closer to equal temperament than standard guitar frets
Sure you mean natural temperament, right?
>they are by no means made to sound better around certain keys
If they're off equal temperament, they sound better in some keys than in others, because, yknow, the temperament ain't equal.

I guess it makes sense people don't want to go all the way, though.
GermanyBernd2023-01-21 06:02:56 · 3yNo. 250244reply
I went for the first one.

you know, actually I think the very same way as you about all this but since the manufacturer and several high cred guitar YouTubers say otherwise I am unsure what to believe.

if you want a taste of how they sound, I recommend searching "true temperament frets paul davis" on YouTube.
It almost reminds one of a synth because it is so awkward to hear a guitar tuned closer to equal temperament.

Well, it would be hard to attach a living tree to your guitar...
NetherlandsBernd2023-01-22 15:11:07 · 3yNo. 250355reply
I'd say you're both wrong. Basically, there's no such thing as natural harmonic because there's many of them based on different ratios which are noted in these chart numbers in blue. However, these are not really combinable - if you go 7/5 two times you get 49/25 instead of 2/1, and the same with other intervals, no number of perfect fifths would give you a just number of octaves etc.
Basically it means there's no way to make perfect frets as there's no such thing as a pefect natural pitch, many slightly different intervals are natural at the same time and all these different fret systems are just different compromises.

GermanyBernd2023-01-22 16:11:26 · 3yNo. 250361reply
>Basically it means there's no way to make perfect frets
exactly, TTF are just less imperfect than normal frets
NetherlandsBernd2023-01-22 18:02:55 · 3yNo. 250377reply
In some sense yes, in some quite the opposite. Equal temperament is like average of all the different definitions while these TTF are fit for some of these definitions exactly completely disregarding others. It's not like there's some perfect pitch frequency - there're just different tunings with different overall sound and you may chose which one fits your melody the best.

Anyway strings are always imperfect, real frequency of a string depends not only on its free length but also on stiffness (see fanned frets), pressure and some unrelated factors so there's not a lot of sense in trying to hit some exact frequencies with frets. Many other instruments don't have frets at all and have great sound (if you can play them).
SloveniaBernd2023-01-22 21:52:44 · 3yNo. 250391reply
OK I get it, this doesn't compensate only for the difference between equal and natural temperament, but also for the fact that due to how tension of the string works (I remember calculating this in physics class lol) pinching the string itself already ups the pitch a bit (+ natural harmonics themselves of a string under tension aren't powers of 2...)
GermanyBernd2023-01-23 01:56:26 · 3yNo. 250406reply
natural harmonics have never been powers of 2

they are x times the base frequency
