I'm watching vids and learning about native american societies and many of them are matriarchal to the extreme. Like you think modern protestant anglos are bad, wait until you hear about this shit

The woman is essentially the owner of all dwellings and property. Any inheritance is passed to the daughters. The son is expected to leave the house when they are of age and court a woman to be allowed into her home and start a family.

If there is ever a divorce, the woman recieves absolutely everything they owned. The cars, home (which she owned already anyway) shared businesses, etc.

The man is expected to just completely start from scratch and find another woman with a home who needs a man with absolutely no help from his family as all resources are given to women.

This is really the best system they come up with?

It seems much of it comes from a history of nearby enemy tribes raiding and kidnapping their women, so they decided women must be protected at all costs to protect their clan's ancestry.

Not really a threat anymore but it remains heavily ingrained in their culture.

A lot of this is also consequence of men spending most of their time away from home.
Iroquois had that literal longhouse matriarchy but their men typically stayed away in bands with other warriors on warpath or otherwise hunting.

I think it's better than expecting man to do woman's chores as head of the house.

A lot of those accounts are funnily enough based on European explorers which could be pretty biased. Male domination is practically an inevitability after a certain stage in human society.

And like you mentioned, in many cases matrilineality was a consequence of high male mortality in warfare, and such societies could be quite restrictive of females.

For Hopi it's actually well evidenced when it happened, in 1690s after the revolt against the Spanish when majority of adult males were killed.
