In Chile, 1920, Arturo Alessandri was elected as president. He based his campaign in a series of social reforms. The problem was that he had a minority in Congress and all of his projects were ignored or postponed indefinitely. In september 1924 he manage to get his proposals to congress but, at the last minute they were postponed again and instead the congressmen started to discuss a salary increase for themselves. The problem was that that day around 50 army officers, captains and lieutenants all from middle or working class background were present and were in favor of the new social laws. The president of the Senate ordered everybody to leave the building, but the officers, while they were leaving, started to hit the bottom of their scabbards against the floor, in an event known as “ruido de sables” (rattle of sabers). The congressmen were so scared that five days later they approved the social laws of the government: 8 hours labour day instead of 12, suppression of child labour, collective bargaining, occupational safety laws, legalization of trade unions, among others.
I’m not saying people should do the same, but I think we need to remember that politicians screw us because we let them. If we manage to scare them a bit we might get something.
I think that democracy was good during a period of time where every single citizen had a certain amount of involvement in the progression of a country, and their opinions actually mattered because they were the very people crucial to the country's development, during that point in time it worked very well because they were actually invested in these things, as opposed to now where there is no necessity for people to be as deeply involved in politics any longer since it doesn't really affect their lives in the same way that it once did.
Then there's also the entire argument behind whether people nowadays are even capable of making the correct decisions, which democracy is entirely based around.
Politics have reached a certain level where in order for someone to be competent within it, he or she would need to be educated within these matters, and it more often than not is something that most people simply are not.
Yeah it’s offtopic but I don’t understand how you weren’t banned. Here I can probably say anything (inside the parameters of legality) and nothing will happen. Worst case scenario is people who are really pissed off by what you have said will find who you are, go to your address and lynch you. And a lot of resentful people in this country so you must watch your mouth.
