yes, I used to have a friend who was suffering from depression and the pills helped (it was hard to convince him to take them since some days he felt like it was pointless to even try); we're not friends anymore for unrelated reasons but he's doing much better now

I say this precisely because I have been through real mental and physical anguish throughout my life and I am disgusted by people who spontaneously claim to be "depressed", or even "traumatized" in the most outrageous cases, even though they haven't gone through any real trauma or significant troubles any kind. Maybe there is something in Germany's mothers past that warrants feeling depressed but it doesn't seem like it with such an out of the blue diagnosis

Try to be a better son and make her breakfast when she is not expecting it. Buy her a basket of flowers and some chocolate. Maybe you could go to the movies or make a roadtrip to the zoo

Depression is a serious mental illness and can very well be terminal, if it goes untreated for a long time and leads to suicide or other self-harm. Nevertheless an illness doesn’t have to lead to death in order for being considered serious. Life with depression is hell.
