when I was in uni I had a fuckton of math classes and you bet I used a calculator for the simplest things during exams, not because I can't count but just to make sure the rules of math haven't changed overnight

Does being good in calculating in your head does anything for you other than being faster in calculating things in your head. If not you might just as well practice getting to your smartphone calculator faster.

 

I forgot everything I knew about analysis, integration, or solving differential equations. I don't think I lost anything in forgetting this stuff.

This is a skill that is needed at a job selling people stuff. You could be able to calculate 11+5 withing less than a second and tell the customer 16 immediately, or you could take out a calculator, put the numbers in and then tell the customer after 10-20 seconds looking like an idiot.

 

Besides. I don't really consider this a skill to be practiced. It's not analysis or integration or equations. It's literally first grade math. 11+5, come on, Bernd. I'm just astonished someone can't do this. It's like an adult not being able to tie their shoes.
