Why are there no passenger trains in the US?

Reminder: any answer that explains for the US must also explain Canada.

- culture of little public spending.
- higher living standard. Trains are for poor people
- cars and gasoline are extremely cheap compared to europe.
- bigger distances with way less population density. This makes the train even more expensive compared to the car.

The oil monopoly killed the railroads. Keep in mind that what really connected the US in the XIX century were railroads, they were so important that the economic (and therefore it’s general) fate of frontier towns could be determined if they had a railroad or not. After the invention of cars and discovery of oil there were massive economic interests and extreme lobbying against trains and railroads. Even so more after WW2 when gringos started copying the German highways (before this most of their roads were literal dirt roads).

iirc, Interstate highways were more of "lets just force petty crooks and hobos to do stuff, we'll be feeding them + sending monies to yheir families"

Sure, but they could have an EU-tier grid along the Toronto-Ottawa-Montréal-Québec axis. That area is comparable to peninsular Italy in area, shape, and population...

Yes. A modern large plane.

In fact, USAnians have good airliners, I'll give them that.

Quite a compensation for railways...
