Can't decide whether I should sign up for Russian or Chinese courses at uni.
Perhaps I'll just take both but I don't know if I can handle the workload of doing two more languages while studying.

I have 24 hours and a few minutes left to decide.

I'd pick Russian

Pros of Russian:
- many many people here speak it, only today I met 3
- I can read it quite well already but not talk at all
- I could hike Bald and Bankrupt style through the russian speaking world

Cons:
- sadly, quite useless

Pros of Chinese:
- just thinking of learning it makes me wet because it interests me a lot
- I already know Kanji so it's probably a lot of points at Uni for a not too big amount of work
- likely to stay relevant unlike RU

Cons:
- subjective, but i think it sounds very ugly
- i probably won't be able to hit the tones because of the my inevitable accent and natives won't understand
GermanyBernd2022-10-13 21:48:36 · 4yNo. 232767reply
Neither, just learn Spanish or Italian or Japanese or Korean if you want Asian. Russian is pointless and ugly, Chinese is super ugly but might be useful
GermanyBernd2022-10-13 21:51:53 · 4yNo. 232772reply
For some reason Spanish never interested me, Italian is quite cool but I already know French quite well so it's not interesting enough.
I know Japanese and why would you ever even consider studying Korean? That's insane. It's even more useless than Russian unless you are into K-Pop.
GermanyBernd2022-10-13 21:58:12 · 4yNo. 232776reply
>ever even consider studying Korean
Because I like the way the Korean characters look
GermanyBernd2022-10-13 21:59:38 · 4yNo. 232778reply
Hm, I don't really support the Korena lookism of having to get plastic surgery to have a career unless you won the generic lottery. It feels very awkward to me.

i used to watch a lot of chinese cartoons because i liked trying to read the subtitles that they always add
GermanyBernd2022-10-13 23:04:00 · 4yNo. 232797reply
I feel like the chinese language lacks emotion because they have to care about the tones while speaking so they can't scream MOOOOOM or BLYAAAAAT
GermanyBernd2022-10-13 23:31:36 · 4yNo. 232803reply
i watched your clips and it feels bland compared to other languagues

perhaps it is because i am used to a flow of pitch when people speak

hahaha this gave me a good laugh

but yeah, that's how over 90% of foreign movies are dubbed here (and to make things even funnier, it's usually the same guy every time, idk what's going to happen when he kicks the bucket)
IranBernd2022-10-14 18:58:39 · 4yNo. 232969reply
Dubs are only good if they come with subs as well
What are you going to do when you couldn't understand a word?

For example almost all movies are dubbed in German but I don't watch them because if I can't understand a new word, I can't learn it either.
There are many "Doku"s and "Reportage"s on youtube from the German national or state TV with subtitles but they are boring as hell and I can't get myself to watch them either

Serious answer study Russian it's a beautiful language and once you forcefeed yourself the vocabulary the grammar comes naturally. Chinese is a tonal language which, well, humans don't communicate through squeaks and squeals. удачи.

did you know that original proto-indo-european was a tonal language as well?
as was ancient greek, and baltic and scandinavian languages still are (tho I believe scandinavian languages lost and redeveloped tones)
