It has at least four totally different ways to read in different languages which are totally messed with each other due to the borrowed words and still people use it a lot.

i know of five sounds that it is associated with (counting languages that din't use laddin alphabet)

 

-the correct j sound (fennic and germanic languages)

-ž sound (french)

-dž (english)

-throat h (spanish)

-ts (chinese)

also wect slavic and originally italian (where it's still used in dialects but official italian dropped it)

 

french and spanish use it differently due to changes in pronunciation since, originally they also pronounced it correctly

but didn't change spelling (but official italian changed it to g(i) in cases where it was similars)

In Spanish it also differs very much between Spain itself and Latin America where it sounds closer to "ch"
