Transgenderism doesn't have its roots in aristocracy, homosexuality neither. There were classes of gender non-conforming people in various ancient societies and non-european ones (which were encountered during the great explorations and colonisation eras).

 

All the way back to Mesopotamia, to Antiquity (see the Enarees in Scythia, the Galli -priests of Cybele, etc.).

 

There were also classes of transgender people around Naples up until recently, and a female to male transgender tradition in the Balkans up until the 90s (the "Sworn virgins" of Albania, who took up a male gender identity in exchange of staying chaste, and who would be treated and called as a man).

Also the hijras of India, etc.

 

Same applies with homosexuality, which existed in a more or less accepted state in tons of societies throughout various ages.
