What really happened when the Indo-Europeans came to Europe? What were Old Europeans like?

Old Europeans probably spoke an agglutinitive language like Basque (Basque is the last Old European langage) and wrote the "vinca symbols".

Also: pre-Indo Europeans probably looked like the groups of people with the most orange.

Basque genetics is less Old European than their neighbours though.
I think everything points rather at Basque being a language of a small group that tagged along PIE as they invaded and somehow managed to get their own realm, similar to how Hungarians tagged along all the other mostly Turkic speaking nomads.
(Suddenly, the Basque-Kartvelian connection no longer sounds as far-fetched... just in a different way.)

Genetics isn't necessarily correlated with language, though.

Basques carry the r1b haplogroup and substantial yamnaya (PIE) genes. Some historians theorize that PIE invaders likely took a bunch of basque women as war brides, but didn't pass on their language or culture to the offspring (the basque mothers likely raised their half PIE children with basque language and culture).

Interesting theory.

Me too.

Cmon, just quit the assumption that Yamnaya were completely monolithic (protip: no material culture is) and everything makes much more sense.
Northern Caucasus is very linguistically diverse today & there is no reason to assume Yamnaya who came from that exact region (and who are demonstrably decent part CHG ancestry) would not include a CHG language speaking group too.

It really depends whether it's violence stemming from will to might (side note: "will to power" is a shitty translation) or aimless violence.
Only one of those creates a lasting legacy. Which itself makes it cool.

O kantians! Glorious race! To you I say - cleanse the nietzschean filth from the face of the Earth! Impale their heads on both sides of your spears, ruin their cities, burn their libraries, enslave their women, topple the statues of their false god!
