This is also the reason why Russia can. Europe is depleted on the energy, especially after shutting down more nuclear plants. It will only be worse in following years -- only thing that somewhat dampened the effect so far was a relatively warm winter, but even given that and US shipments there is still gas understock.

 

Nobody in Europe would want to really piss Russia off when their own political stability during winter months would be very much dependent on Russia's natural gas for years to come.

It's 2022, Nord Stream 2 is a thing now.

It was intended to expand the capacity, but not sure if it will be enough alone.

 

The entire "West" justification for it is that there can't be a single unified political entity dominating Eurasia, but depending on the mood in Germany and India, this can be untenable.
