I personally like 2nd and 3rd more then 1st one, which is unorthodox opinion as far as i know.

only the first one is worth anything imo, the sequels and Animatrix were trash that lost the original idea and feel almost entirely by largely shifting the focus from the Matrix to the ruined irl world
the reboot i think is an absurd idea and guaranteed trash considering crazy the Wachowski "sisters" are these days, butmight still watch it one way or the other
how can i explain what i feel
technically i suppose the story and worldview remains consistent throughout the series but the sequels have a totally different feel to them, it no longer appears to be about Plato's Cave, the problem of metaphysics and alla dat
in the sequels they go much deeper into the literal layer of the story, it is no longer about our world and our perception of it, instead it's about what happens in the war between human hacker guerillas and the machine overlords
that's the best i can explain it
I started listening to a podcast that talks about the first Matrix movie minute by minute. Every episode is like 45 minutes talking about one minute of the film. From what I've gathered the first movie was much more thought out and better planned that 2 and 3, which were cranked out rather rapidly.
Overall I think the aesthetics are very cool.
The cinematography must have been revolutionary when it came out, but now it has become very normal and it has been with us for so long that I don't see it as special anymore.
Similar with the story: It has become so much of a meme that I don't see it as impressive anymore.
