Bernd will probably not be able to relate but it makes me kinda sad that there probably will never be a proper printed encyclopedia again.
I am seriously considering buying one now. Do you think they will be worthless in 25 years or rare and sought after.
I always wanted a nice book collection because it looks nice and gives a kind of cozy and safe feeling.

Could be that such a thing will be a gimmicky decorative item in the future even though we won't need them as an infa source

Could be that an antique shop will buy such a thing in 25 years but not for a fortune probably

as dust have settled we can now clearly see that encyclopedias are state propaganda fart full of shit, so whats the point of spending money and space on it?
GermanyBernd2021-08-29 09:02:11 · 5yNo. 121498reply
It is a snapshot of the "truth" at a certain time. If anything a encyclopedia from 1990 will contain less propaganda than anything you will get to read in the future. No one can go into your home and rewrite your books.

They're better written than wikipedia that's for sure. Wikis are a frankensteinian monster after all, not that it's not useful.

Were you the Bernd that liked my Brockhauses?
They're from 1987 btw.
GermanyBernd2021-08-29 11:31:48 · 5yNo. 121503reply
I wasn't but now that I seen them I like them very much.

I am debating whether I should try to get the Encyclopedia Britannica from the year I was born including the yearbook, which would be pretty nice, or get a modern encyclopedia with nice color pictures like The World Book 2022. That one seems less mature and valuable tho.
GermanyBernd2021-08-29 11:35:02 · 5yNo. 121504reply
why not get a german one
GermanyBernd2021-08-29 11:41:05 · 5yNo. 121505reply
They want around 2k € for the last published Brockhaus on ebay. And the ones under 1500 don't want to ship them.
GermanyBernd2021-08-29 18:03:59 · 5yNo. 121520reply
Yes, there's something appealing about the idea of owning a big encyclopedia... but it will most likely be dead weight on your shelf. A lot of dead weight. There's a reason people don't want to ship that stuff. Consider a smaller set with 3-5 volumes, there's already a lot of information in these. (Also visitors won't mock you for it.)

Having that large set in PDF format would be cool, though... Unfortunately I only found the single-volume Brockhaus from 2011 online and that's not very good.

Coincidentally I was looking up a reseller of the great books of the western world. Many libraries I've huddled into while hitchhiking carry a small selection of their catalogue or the entire ordeal. Scanning through some of their selections doesn't do their authors much justice based on their works but this collection is a wonderful starting point to any autist. I met a schizo kiwi on the north island with 6-10 of these. Fucking pig disgusting fellow but a clever boy regardless of his antipathy to hygiene.
And I've ruminated on the idea to make a printing press one day to print out of print public works as a fun hobby to rebirth older titles we've forgotten I'll sell pirated copies of copyrighted too cause fug copyright. Problems are that modern printers have poisoned privacy and made the cost to quality ratio beyond acceptable.

An action for 60 volumes of the great books of the western world just ended unsuccessfully on German ebay. I was kind of tempted. 500€ seemed really cheap.

But I like to fill the open shelves I have with uniform looking books. I wouldn't want to display the random books anyways.
Maybe someone has a good idea for nice book series. I am collecting the new Manesse Bibliothek for example.

>uniform looking books
Hm... do you also read them or do you do it to decorate your walls?
GermanyBernd2021-08-29 18:37:33 · 5yNo. 121529reply
Of course I read them. Just not as much as I used to sadly.
New ZealandBernd2021-08-29 18:53:55 · 5yNo. 121530reply
>€500
Seems a bit expensive but as the collection is growing rarer, it may be a fine deal if you have the spare cash.

Books are gonna be a huge comeback soon as the Internet becomes complete shit. For encyclopedias, though, not so sure, they become outdated faster than updated.

So far my attempts at buying anything on ebay have been unsuccessful. Most sellers don't want to ship and don't accept paypal. Many look like scams, since they only use pictures straight from google.
Asking the sellers for more pictures has been unsuccessful. One said they would accept paypal but didn't change the listing. Not sure if they believe I would straight up send them money. Sounds like a scam, too.

I remember using encyclopedias in elementary school for book reports, feels old man.

If you are interested in buying some, I have noticed sets in used book stores/antique malls of varying prices. I think the best chance of getting an encyclopedia set for a good price would be a garage sale; I see them all the time at garage and yard sales. I would buy an old set of I had space, just because I find them very enjoyable to read when you're bored.
GermanyBernd2021-09-05 14:21:30 · 5yNo. 122148reply
I wanted to go to a flea marked for a while now. Not sure what to expect.
Sadly I don't think there are many yard or garage sales where I live.

Not much luck on ebay so far still. The sellers rarely respond and seem to doge questions. One told me he would upload more pictures but that was days ago.

Have you tried Abe books? On eBay, you can find some rare books on there which the seller has no idea the true value of, but I feel it isn't the best place for bibliophiles
