>Vatican
You mean, the Stato della Chiesa in all its glory, when it covered what is today Lazio, Umbira, and Marche? Vatican of today being a concession of Mussolini to the Pope, so that the Church could once again be considered a sovereign subject to international treaties.

It's called "Papal States" in English, but yes. I was just using a term I knew everyone would recognize.

Could the vatican have united Italy? Is that even a possible scenario? Would it secularize quickly? Would Italy be a theocracy with a secular government?

Imagine being a common catholic soldier and you have to fight the papal states. Must be awkward.
