When Germany invaded Denmark in WWII, the UK seized the opportunity to invade the Faroe Islands in order to secure them as a strategically important place. Previously, they had been part of Denmark, but very unimportant and with their own language and national identity, that was suppressed under Danish rule. During the occupation in WWII, the Faroese had their first taste of independence from Denmark, flew their own flag for the first time, issued their own currency and some other things. When WWII ended, they were returned to Denmark. They even voted to become an independent state, but this has yet to be implemented. However, they have gained more and more freedoms from their colonial masters over the years.
