I think we live in hard times (maybe I'm biased ?), but I wouldn't say "the darkest period", we dont really know

strong men created good times (60s-70s american dream, even illiterate debile could buy a house),
good times created weak men (boomers pampered by wealthy life in 70s),
boomers created hard times (constant world wars in middle east, color revolutions, refugee crysis, pandemic, economic crysis etc.)

if I grew up in the 70s I would have probably kys'ed for not being able to escape in the internet from bullying.
Also, as a language fetishist it is really nice to get books, movies and games in many languages for free + meeting foreigners and traveling used to be a lot harder as well
