FinlandGood job jarBernd2021-01-11 14:41:15 · 5yNo. 106738reply
This is a jar of marbles, everytime you do something to further your NY goals you get to pick a marble at random. The color of the glass marble determines what small reward you get. Ideally 90% of the marbles will be one color, with no other reward than a pat on your back. The rest 10% will signify a proper reward of your choice.

At the end of the year you can count the marbles and reflect on your progress.

What does Bernd think?

>What does Bernd think?
Majority of people don't have goals nor understanding of their own desires.
FinlandBernd2021-01-11 14:57:01 · 5yNo. 106744reply
That can’t be true.
RussiaBernd2021-01-11 14:58:43 · 5yNo. 106748reply
Sure it can. Goal and desire is something specific. Majority of people feel need in vague things mostly, and when they want something in particular, it rarely becomes goal and stays a dream.

You’re saying the majority of people don’t make plans and work towards their dreams? What’s the point in life then?
RussiaBernd2021-01-11 15:11:41 · 5yNo. 106751reply
You suggest to reward people for having dreams, did I understand you right? That sounds terrible.
Aside from that, ordinary person really has no goals in life except for buying flat and go to some country on vacation. If you can list any other particular commonly presented goal, I can change my mind.

Gf, the need to procreate is strong in humanity.

Working toward goals is the point, the marble method is for people who can’t motivate themselves for long-term pleasure and need the short-term reward/novelty to get shit done.

At least my dreams are hard to reach, needing grueling effort and sweat. Being an impulsive piece of shit deep down, I use all the tricks in the book to ensure progress. This should work well, as marbles are pretty nice.

I do not see the advantage of randomizing the reward value. Would it not better be proportional to the impact the regarding action had towards goal completion?
Either way, I'm pretty convinced that self imposed artificial reward systems don't work on me in the long term.

It souds cute, funny and childish at the same time.

>Gf
Acquiring gf isn't a goal, but a matter of chance as people usually make gf/bf in favorable situations and don't plan beforehand. Am I right?
>Working toward goals is the point
Didn't say it isn't.
>At least my dreams are hard to reach
Dreams and goals aren't the same. You should reward for actual planning and work and not for wishing something. Am I right?

Randomizing makes it a game a gamble, making it far more exciting.

The marble jar is used on kindergarteners actually, those that can not make to-do lists yet and tick them off.

Some cynics say all our efforts are for securing a mate./gf.

Ah I see, I use dreams and goals interchangeably, I have goalified my dreams. Wishing is just visualizing the (life) goal.

>Some cynics say all our efforts are for securing a mate./gf.
Well that opinion should be discarded taking into account how many people use contraception these days. Having sex is a real goal in life, I can believe that, and a common one.
>I have goalified my dreams.
We were talking not about yourself in particular in the beginning, but about majority. I'm still waiting for some common goals to name except for sex, house and security(which is basically house and income). Tho I want to make a remark that wanting security isn't the same as achieving the security. How many people make stable income a goal and actually work toward it etc.
FinlandBernd2021-01-11 16:02:03 · 5yNo. 106773reply
In the beginning I had trouble believing your remark that people don’t set goals for themselves, my perspective being that dreams=goals. So are there really people on Earth that honestly only can think of sex and security? That’s no life worth living.
RussiaBernd2021-01-11 16:06:48 · 5yNo. 106774reply
Yes. Don't you talk with other people? Just ask your friends or colleagues what goals they have and what steps they take to make them true. Most likely you'll hear many goals, but they'll be actually just wishes as people will hardly tell you about specific actions they make, as there will be none. We don't count some passive waiting for action.

>Don’t you talk with people?
No, I have no close friends or colleagues and seriously lack life experience. Thanks for the insight.

Call it first world priviledge, but just existing should not be enough for anyone.

Just existing is pretty comfy, you know. Many of us don't have a goal to went home after a workday and drink nice tea watching series, yet it's pretty easily achieved and nice time spending.
