Does Bernd do a kind of martial art? Or did in the past?

If you do a typical self defense style there should even be a few women there.
Getting to throw them or being thrown sounds nice.

Sounds like a nice sport for Bernd.

- Lots of odd nerdy people (practicing stances, pretend fights)
- No team work needed
- Sensei tells everyone what to do

I learned taijiquan for about 7 years. I liked it.

How do I, a 27 year old with no friends, take up judo?

How does it normally work when you visit a new place for the first time?

Do you start with other beginners or do they put you in a corner somewhere to train the basics by yourself?

So I have been searching all schools within 10 km now and other than judo (which seems to be popular with old people and little children only) and bydlo boxing clubs, none of them offer actual "fighting".
And I don't mean hitting people in the face fighting. They don't even touch each other.

Have you considered MMA/BJJ? These are more faster growing sports and have more adult newcomers.
GermanyBernd2021-01-04 17:44:36 · 5yNo. 106023reply
Have you searched for a Jiu Jitsu one yet?

Depending on where you live, at the base (in Gelsenkirchen) might be worth visiting once Koronehr goes gets dealt with.
GermanyBernd2021-01-04 18:08:35 · 5yNo. 106024reply
Yes I considered them since they are very popular and they actually work.
But MMA sounds very brutal and I heard BJJ favors short people and I am quite tall.

You mean the real Jiu Jitsu and not the Brazilian one? There are a few but they are all part of Judo school and look more like an afterthought for them and again old people only.

There is one school that teaches all kinds of cool shit like Ninjutsu, "real" Karate (not the competitive kind) and even Kyūdō but they seem to take it a bit to seriously.

I did not even know brazilian Jiu Jitsu existed until you informed me.

I wish you the very best with you search for a martial sport

Go to the next place that offers Judo lessons, pretty simple. Idk how it is in America, but here there are Judo gyms available basically everywhere.

Usually you ask to participate just to try it out. You would come in normal sport clothes because you don't have a gi or other martial arts clothes yet. Then you join the class like everyone else. Usually this means some kind of warm-up together. This might be playing basketball, some other kind of game that involves running, running in circles or more focussed exercises. Then all go in a big circle and do stretches. You'll feel like an idiot because everyone knows what to do but you don't. But nobody judges you because everyone has been there. People will help you.
In the main class, all kinds of things are done and all kinds of skill levels are present. Quite often they do different things. You will be doing whatever is done with a bunch of other newbs, one on one instruction by a teacher or whatever.

I've been the new guy a couple of times in a couple of gyms and it was never a bad experience.

In Germany, Boxing, Kickboxing and MMA is mostly done by bydlo. BJJ could go either way. Other martial arts are a 50/50 of being a mcdojo for children and other noobs or more high iq fit people.

In some places there are boxing clubs associated with the local police department. If you go boxing there the chance of encountering turbo bydlo are a bit lower. Maybe check in your own city too.

Currently I practice Lin Kuei, the original kung fu of the Chinese "ninja". From which all the other branches of kung fu derive.
