I am so interested in the period and already read that book. The oligarchs is much better. I'm thinking of reading the piratization of Russia next. Have you any other recommendations?

Me, I just finished Odyssey. Kind of ashamed to say I left it for this late in my life, but better late than never is more true here than ever. The translator I chose (Fitzgerald) really made me feel like I was experiencing the authentic Homer. I love this passage in particular.

 

ATM I'm also reading Arrian's Anabasis Alexandri, which has not been particularly captivating so far. He does provide a lot of technical detail in military affairs. I read all of Plato's essentials while finishing my readings about the internecine Greek wars before Alexander. I still want to read some of his other dialogues, but for now I'm keen to move on to Aristotle to accompany the Hellenistic age, mainly the Ethics.

I'm reading Robert Spencer's Did Muhammed Exist, halfway through

 

I don't think his case is very convincing but he does largely btfo the reliability of the Hadiths as a historical source
