The nautilus is a scavenger rather than an active predator and it lacks brain structures responsible for behavioral complexity in more advanced cephalopods, namely the vertical lobe which is thought to manage learning and memory in squids, octopuses and cuttlefish. Despite this, it is the longest lived cephalopod by a large margin. A nautilus may live to be 15 or 20 whereas most other cephalopods live for only 1-3 years. The nautilus is today represented by six species in two genera.
