Recently I started biking regularly.

My knees are fucked and doctor recommended biking as knee friendly exercise. So far I’m just riding around my bike at night in my city and try to develop a better sense of orientation. I try to find the same lake, but every time I take a slightly different route and try to find it anyway.

One problem I’ve noticed is that I get numb hands sometimes. Maybe I will have to adjust the handles.

Do you think I should get an helmet or other additional gear? Any recommendations for using biking as exercise?

I also bike pretty amateur too. I know what you mean, like a discomfort in the wrists, and that's why those bikes exist where the handle is like a horn and they just grab it without having to turn the wrists. Also my ass hurts and I've been seen a biker friend that has biking pants with a huge ass support to avoid that pain I believe. So definitely get all the gear necessary, I will when I get a job.

It's probably a good idea to make sure your bike has reflectors and lights if you don't already have them. Maybe grab a bell you can ring at pedestrians who don't hear you coming. Helmet is probably a good idea but I personally don't bother because it makes you look like a dweeb and I haven't fallen off my bike in years. God speed bernd.

What kind of handlebar do you have?
GermanyBernd2020-09-02 22:16:24 · 6yNo. 100753reply
Bell, lights and reflectors are mandatory equipment for bikes in Germany. Only poorfags don't have them and will have to pay a fine if caught by police.

Idk what different kinds there are or how they are called. A straight handlebar like pic rel.

I'm usually not butthurt by biking. But wouldn't it make more sense to get a comfy seat with padding instead of having pants with padding?

Then you should check if your brake levers/shifters have a very steep angle and if your grips are not soft enough.

And yes, get a helmet FFS, your brain can not be replaced if it gets fucked up.

I think the angle isn't very natural and will look into improving that. The grips are from old rubber that started to become gross and sticky. I would like to get them replaced with hard plastic. Does them being soft have any benefits? I prefer hard surfaces and will wear biking gloves anyway because I like having excuses to wear gloves.

Won't wearing a helmet make it more likely that I become a cripple? If I get run over by a car I prefer having my brain destroyed and die instead of having my spine destroyed but surviving. Imagine waking up in hospital paralyzed and not being able to kys.

Something like -30 degrees should be OK.

Soft ones like silicone/rubber/foam will absorb vibrations and provide more comfort, pretty much like a mattress. Gloves are still an excellent idea, get full finger ones with some padding in the palm.

Cars are not your only worry, you can simply crash while riding. So get a helmet, and don't be a cheap bastard, you don't need something super fancy but don't buy the cheapest one either. MIPS is a nice plus if you want to shell out some extra moneis.
GermanyBernd2020-09-02 22:43:52 · 6yNo. 100793reply
What is MIPS? I guess I'll save up some money and go to the bike store and let them do some checkings, new grips and helmet all at once.

I think I still have a bike bag somewhere that I can attach and collect bottles like a poor retiree when I'm riding around. Maybe I can earn some € back.
NorwayBernd2020-09-02 22:46:25 · 6yNo. 100797reply
MIPS is a system that some helmets have, it offers extra protection during crashes if they get bad enough. Also, you can just buy the grips and change them yourself, absolutely 0 difficulty there, check out park tool/gcn tech/gmbn tech on youtube for help.

I fell on heda as child, too. Maybe another one will end the sufferings.

Riding your bike often and through nice places will help you push the sufferings away.

How long do you ride your bike? So far my longest tour since knee problems started was 90 minutes and usually its between 30 and 60. Since it's going well so far I will look up longer routes to take.
NorwayBernd2020-09-02 23:00:57 · 6yNo. 100813reply
Depends, my longest ride was over 3 hours I think, but it was mostly cruising around.

Tfw i never learned to ride a bike. My parents bought me one but i was pretty clumsy and fell other a few times and just gave it up. Such cases.

I had trouble learning how to ride a bike. When my parents tried to teach me I felt pressured and they became frustrated and angry when I didn’t get it. Then my friends learned how to ride bikes before me and I was shamed when the topic came up. I eventually managed, but it was very stressful and traumatic. I always preferred figuring things out myself without judging eyes on me.

Wearing pants while biking is fucking ridiculous

Wear shorts

You should watch some "bike fitting" videos.
Your wrists are probably bent too much.
Also the correct height of the seat and position of your feet on the pedal is important.
GermanyBernd2020-09-03 20:38:06 · 6yNo. 101006reply
I was not aware the word "pants" implies long legs.
